Does F@H slow down gaming?

Good Morning everyone. Just a quick question. I'm heading out today to install an antivirus program update for a customer who has two custom built Athlon XP gaming pc's. I have been talking to him about folding and he seems interested. I need to know if the console version has any adverse effects on gaming. The only issue that could stand in my way would be his son complaining that his games will no longer work properly. Wish me luck on adding two new borgs.

As long as you're not running the graphical client all should be well. You would probably want to stick with just a basic setup, no -advmethods, and no big WU's, but normal WU's should be fine and not cause any problems.

And if it gets to be an issue, you can show them how to shut it off in the services console or create bat files to do it for them.

By no advanced methods do you mean this entry?

11)Disable highly optimized assembaly core ( no/yes ) - Disable highly optimized assembly code. - I never click this box. What is does is turn off FAH's ability to use your CPU's SSE and SSE2 code. In turn , slowing down the Folding process.

I copied that from DRK13's website. Those are his comments.

-advmethods is a command line switch used to enable beta proteins. Essentially it makes puts your box in the hands of Stanford where you can get buggy proteins that can cause undesireable behavior.

The portion of text you've cut out refers to the SSE boost. Under no circumstances do you want to have this shut off as it absolutely kills the speed at which many proteins fold. Actually its of an importance level that its most often recommended that you run the console with the -forceasm switch which forces SSE boost on even if the console doesn't shut down cleanly.

The -forceasm switch is so important if for some reason it did't shutdown correctly for example Windows freezes because of someother program F@H might not shutdown correctly and F@H may start up again but without using SSE boost and it just kills performance. Make sure to add it in the registry entry. I know that p[H]ant0m just said this, but it's so important that I must reiterate it.

Just to make sure it's clear, don't turn off that option you mentioned. The "switches" they're talking about are command line options, like this:
"FAH502-Console.exe -forceasm -advmethods"
You want to have -forceasm going, but not -advmethods. If you use my installer (look at the "remote borging kit" thread) then it sets this by itself.

I'm back from the install. Thanks for all the info guys but unfortunately the customer said no. I did get 2 complete systems(300mhz) a few other misc parts, and a free lunch out of the deal. I even found a $10 bill on the curb as I was leaving. :) I will break down the PC's and see if I can build one decent crapper out of the parts. I'll be folding endless on it but something is better than nothing.

Fold on!!!

With the consol version as a service, there should be no problems that I know of. The games technically may run a little bit slower...... 1-2FPS out of 100, and it might take up a "little" RAM. If you use big work units, then it can become noticible because of the larger ram usage.

~Hope this helps

So many wisecracks, so little time.

As long as he's not making mistakes on his "borging runs".... the last thing we need is a bunch of little K*s running around! :D

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

Too bad you weren't able to borg those two machines. I've found that I have no noticable impact on gaming if I have the following settings:

no big units
no advmethods
idle priority (lower than 'low') <-this one's important.

I play a fair amount of UT2004 demo (still trying to convince my wife to let me get the full game), and I don't notice any impact. I don't even have that nice of a rig--just a piddly AthlonXP 1800 with 512MB RAM and a GeForce4 Ti4200.
