I was wondering if anyone knows is cigarete smoke afecting LCD displays. Thanks on your time.

I don't smoke, but since I have seen vehicle windows and windshields covered in tar and residue from cigarettes, I think an LCD could get build up.

dcmix is correct. All that junk that's building up on your lungs is also building up on everything in your house. including the surface and interior of your monitor.

Absolutely. LCD panels cool themselves via convection and the smoke particles will form a film on anything inside. Possibly even the backlight, throwing the color out of whack.

Cigarette smoke affects everything and the residue even gets inside of electronics..you can imagine the buildup on an exposed screen.

To answer the OP's question:

No,it does not.I smoke pretty heavy and have not seen a thing,as to ciggy smoke being bad for the screens. My wife (smoker) has also commented that it does not seem to effect them.

We have 6 lcd's in the house (24" 2407, 20" 2005, 19" Hyundai L90D+, 17" LG 1715SK, 17" LG 1751S,and a dying Viewsonic 15" 30ms)Plus a few Samsung 19" CRT's,even the grills of the crts are fine.I dont blow smoke at them,if at all possible. We also have air conditioning, and a air purifier though.+(Allot of house plants, which I have been told help get rid of the smoke) What the ciggarette smoke does have a bad effect on,is dust build up in the case of the comps we have. This is easily dealt with my using a few extra cans of air ! :D The Viewsonic was near death when we got it though,so I doubt the smoke had any real negative effect. My wife and I halve cut down allot since last summer though.

We were a pack a day each last July, now its nearer to just under half a pack a day each.I am 35 going on 55 and have been smoking since I was 14 regularly, and I have also been around computers in a big way since about 16,and I dont think it does any real harm. The only thing I dont like is the excess dust build up I mentioned earlier...

With a smoker around, the dust buildup in the case is increased about two to one.Thing is
LCD cases dont have fans sucking in allot of air like your average pc case does.... ;)

The yellow smoke/tar residue will build up on the LCD screen and internals just like it will build up on anything else. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it - it will happen. I don't care what anybody (and their wife) says - to try and deny it is laughable. If someone has been smoking since he was 14 and has been into computers as long as he says he has, he would have to be blind not to see the effects it has on components in general.

Nevermind the gnarly tar coated bits of dust (ugh!) but see how certain things are stained brown/yellow? Like the PCI slotcovers in one of the pics, or the CPU fan guide (it was clear plexiglass)? The same thing can and will happen to the coating on an LCD panel, the bezel, the grille/vent holes, and the electronics inside. Regular cleaning helps a lot but the staining can still happen over a period of time.

I'm not trying to diss the smokers or anything either, I used to smoke and still enjoy a cig occasionally - I just don't smoke inside. :p

I have yet to see any of the crap in those pics on the inside on my pc's at home. What I have seen at work is entirely different. But I am not a pig and dont let it ever get that bad! I had the chance to look into my 2005 from Dell last fall, and it had none of the build up seen in that pic.The screens we have here arent yellow or brown,or any thing like that. They are not discolored at all.Thats a good two or more years of build up.I clean out my equipment meticulosuly and monthly. :) When I opened my Dell last fall it had nothing more then a fine layer of grey dust.

Hi again.First of all thx on your time and fast response-apriciate it a lot.Iv been smoking since i was 15-16.I am not nicotine adict or something.I only smoke in front of my LCD when im browsing the net(few cigares)-when im not gaming. So my opinion is that 3-4 cigares per day cant afect that badly my LCD.Am i wrong  .I know this is not god for my lungs.Main reason of verbal fights between me and my friends. It sux  .
Cigares FTW :p .

Cheers from Croatia  .

Strange that you bother about cigarette hurting your 500$ LCD and not about it killing you, or giving you erectile dysfunction, cancer, respiratory distress or whatever?

Maybe he doesn't want people preaching to him on an online forum?

Personally, I don't think that 4-5 a day would be a huge problem -- as long as the monitor is getting replaced in like 4/5 years or so. It will, of course, have some effect, but with you not smoking that much by your computer, I doubt it would be something that will be noticeable within a couple of years.

i smoke

i dont think its a probllem for the monitor especially if u leave the window open in ur room like i do. besides, what kind of person directly blows smoke into the lcd screen

blow away from the screen lol

There will be a discoloration of the enclosure due to cigarette smoke. Growing up, a friend and I had the same monitor for about three years. He grew up in an environment where both parent's smoked and his monitor had a noticable yellow tinge on the enclosure. There is also a little buildup on the screen, though nothing that a little Windex couldn't fix. As for function, it worked no better or worse than mine. You probably won't even notice if you own a black monitor.

if your cleaning your equipment monthly, your not going to get the grit and tar on your stuff like shown in those pictures.

But if you DONT clean it often, and you dont clean everything, you will have tar like that eventually.

Having seen a 1 year old computer come in looking like those pictures, I know it happens and with my tech. experience its going to happen if your a heavy smoker.

3-4 Stogs a day, naa I don't think that will effect your LCD much at all in the next 10 years (I think your LCD will more then likely fail first before your cigar smoke does)

yes it does, cigarette smoke sticks to everything. As a ex-pc technician I can tell you smoke can do some terribly nasty things to ALL electronics (stench, stains debris) I absolutley hated working on PC's brought in by smokers. LCD displays and CRT's had a nice coating of piss-yellow tinge all throught.

I think any degradation or damage to a monitor from cigarette smoke will be so gradual that you basically won't notice it.

I still smoke, but some years ago I came home and noticed the odor when I walked in the door and made a vow not to smoke in the house again, and I haven't. It lingers in your curtains/drapes (and everything else) and isn't fair to children or pets who have no choice.

When you said "Windex" I hope you were talking about a regular crt....it's not even good for that but it's absolutely DISASTROUS to lcd's. A while back our cleaning service at work decided to be a little too thorough one night and ended up leaving permanent smears on about 18 lcd screens.

A few years ago my Uncle gave my younger brother his old computer, when he himself bought a new one. I believe he has now quit smoking, but he smoked a lot, during the entire time owning that old computer. Anyway, when we bought it home we opened it up to see what was in it, and to clean out the dust. It was disgusting!

Now I don't know if, or how much, the smoke will start to effect the actual display, and if you'll notice it, but if the monitor has ventilation on it it is definitely going to get in the monitor, just like it will with anything else. There's no question about that.

There were no LCD's when I was growing up, so it would definitely be CRT. Maybe I should've said "screen cleaner" so no one attempts to use Windex on their LCD's. Even with newer CRT's you probably don't want to use Windex because of the anti-glare layer applied to the screens. I've heard of it not playing nice with such screens.

The ammonia in Windex will ruin the anti-glare coating.

I managed a cigar store for about 8 years, and moonlight at one on Sunday's now. I can safely say that you have a 100% chance of building up a "smokers film" over time on that monitor. I clean the glass of our display cases every Sunday, and without fail every paper towel is a nice tinge of yellow when I'm done, regardless of visible stains, fingerprints etc.

Switch to cigars! I have 1 or 2 a week, and its a treat and not a habit. I'm sure the non-smoking militia will be here to crucify me shortly, but for someone that smoked 1-2 packs of Kool Filter Kings per day for 10+ years, my 1 or 2 cigars a week is nothing :)

I prefer to not smoke in my apt. at all, as I enjoy the clean environment I come home to everyday, but if you must smoke inside at least ventilate well!

You have got to be kidding! 4 a day will show a huge residue on *everything* in the room.

I've been employed in music/audio/radio and tv/video studios of many types, and those where smoking was allowed suffered at least 5 times as much failing equipment. From servers and desktops doing strange things, making more noise, to CD/DAT/SVHS recorders, mixers and screens burning out and depleating from the extra heat caused by the smoke residue left behind on their parts.

Smoke and mechanical or heating electronics do not mix. You're forgetting the fact that your LCD/TFT has electronics in the back, and lots of them. Even switches on the front (and on your keyboards) will start to fail when smoke gets under them (and it will, believe me!).

I'm 40 years old, and I can assure you, even HardDisks will have a reduced lifespan with a smoker around. I'd guess you cut it down by half, at least, with 4 cigarettes a day in the vicinity of them. And yes, even when your PC is on the floor. Not all that smoke leaves behind is visible, you know?

Why are you judging someone for smoking? It's not your choice and you don't have any say in the matter so let this man smoke with his lcd montior in peace.

<blowing smoke at my CRT as I type this knowing full well that i'll just be able to wipe the screen clean later on...>

Hi again.Pls dont argue about smoking. It is individualy decision of every person,so...I have a question.Since this is my first LCD i would like to know what is the best way to clean it.Anything special or just something simple.Any advice or sugestion would be very helpful.Thx again on your time.

Any smoke leaves a residue on anything, except maybe Dupont's super secret Teflon experiment gone wrong. There are particals in all smoke that's why you can see it  Anyways, you'll have to clean things more frequently than a non-smoker, but other than that I don't see where it's going to actually degrade picture quality. It is true though that plastics will to an extent absorb the particals in smoke, as plastic is porous. So over time plastic does tend to yellow more and in some cases can get more brittle.

Do you also wipe the insides of it? Any idea how many pots are in a CRT and how they are being ruined by smoke?

why do you care? the LCD will last longer than you'd probably want it around, smoke or not.

so again, why care? if you still do, you have two options. smoke around it, or not (includes stopping smoking, smoking outside, smoking in the kids room without the LCD, and etc.).

A once a week cleaning using a spritz of non-alcohol lcd cleaning spray on a microfiber cloth is all you need.

I don't think smoke would hurt anything in your computer because of the newer high pressure fans would just suck it in then push it right back out. But monitors since they don't have any fans i think it could hurt them over time if not opened and cleaned monthly.

Because I'm paying for his cancer-bed too. Plus it keeps the myth alive that smoking is "OK".

Alright, I wasn't going make a comment, but random posts like this need to be wrapped up. First, I bet ya bitch about welfare don't ya? Second, 'paying for his cancer bed'?! Are you down and out with this insurance compay? Cool! Third, why isn't smoking ok? Claim sans warrent is no arguement.

Fini.

Hey, I'm from Bosnia. :D

Haha, Prestani pusit. :p

No idea if cigarette smoke can hurt your LCD, but since it can hurt your lungs, it probably won't be any better for electronics either.
