It seems to me that there are always a good bit of people having a hard time setting things up properly or they use Ati's drivers as a scape goat. I have ran 2900xt's, 4850's, and now on a 4870x2 and so far have not found hardly any problems with getting the drivers to work. If I had a problem, uninstall driver, run driver cleaner, reinstall, and bam works. Do you guys think that Ati needs to dumb down their drivers, make them idiot proof, or are they just fine?

Not a flame thread, just asking for your opinions. When drivers don't work, the problem usually stems from some where else.

By drivers being dumb down, I mean simplified.
 
Drivers need to be dumb down?? Huh? The problems are with the drivers themselves not with people being too stupid to install them. Any moron can run setup and follow the prompts to click next. The problem with ati is no consistency. One driver release kicks ass and then the next 3 unleash holy hell on your machine, assuming they even install or don't BSOD in the middle of installation that is. That has been my experience with them. It is the only piece of hardware that I feel like I am playing Russian roulette with whenever I upgrade its drivers. A driver should just....work.
 
It seems to me that the drivers are fine, and the CCC interface is...adequate.

There is a LOT of room for improvement in the Catalyst Control Center as far as ease of use and convenience is concerned.

I spoke to an AMD rep at the 4870 launch event in San Francisco, and asked him what he thought of the CCC, and he said it was fine, and that he liked it a lot better than NVIDIA's control panel. He did admit that it was kindof small and some people complained about having to scroll sideways, but he didn't see a better execution in the NVCP.

Myself, I hate the CCC and I prefer the NVCP. On the other hand, I have had better experiences with the quality of AMDs drivers than with the quality of NVIDIA's drivers.
 
Awesome hardware, terrible drivers. Although I wouldn't say "dumbed down", but they do need to work on stability. And God that interface of theirs is awful.
 
I prefer the the ATI Control panel over the Nvidia control panel but Im having problems with the newer drivers.

The older 8.11 work fine with no problems.
 
They need to make them work, not dumb them down. I dropped my 8800GTS SLI setup for 3870 CF and now 4850 CF back in december 2007. Since then I have experienced:

black screens on install
BSOD on install
CCC refusing to load (had to flash NON STOCK BIOSes to get it to load)
default display set as a "Secondary display" where I had to extend my desktop to a second display then disable in order to set my resolution

ATI just can not make a functioning driver.

CCC is garbage to. Nvidias control panel works fine and I never once had an issue with their drivers. My next GPU purchase will be nvidia.
 
As far as their interface, I like it now. I hated it at first but much prefer it now to nvidia. It's easy to navigate and to the point. The only thing where nvidia obviously excels in is profiles. Why in 2009 ati still doesn't find it necessary to give us the ability to create custom game profiles for crossfire support and AA/AF/mip-map setting customizations that load automatically based on executable is still a mystery to me. My next card will still definitely be from nvidia either way though.
 
You're in the ATI forum so the results will be slightly skewed.

Anyhow I've never had problems with drivers (Nvidia nor ATI), but I wish ATI was more active with their releases. Seems like Nvidia is always ready to push out new drivers when new games launch, and they always make more driver releases constantly.

ATI is too ho-hum for me, one release per month, like clock work.

The only ATI drivers I had any real issues with were the 8.12 and 9.1 sets.

The 8.12 would not see my 3870 and the 9.1 would cause a hard reboot when I switched from single to dual display.

The 9.2s are a lot better and the 8.12s worked great for my 4850 as well.

Every once in a while ATI really jacks up a driver release.. like the 9.1, but when I had Nvidia cards it was always a fight to find which driver worked best for certain games.

As far as NVidia vs ATI, I had a 6800GS and then a 7900GS. Then I had an ATI 3870 and now a 4850.

I like the ATI drivers a lot better than the Nvidia drivers.... 2-3 "beta" releases a month... comon.. I got better things to do than waste all my time trying different driver versions.
 
I've always had problems with ATI drivers. Right now its working fine, but seriously they do need to improve it. And I'm not saying NVIDIA is any better too, I've had problems with both drivers from both companies.

The second option gets my vote.
 
The CCC is already pretty much fool proof, especially in the Basic mode or whatever it's called. I just use the "All settings" node in Advanced mode to quickly change all settings from one page. Nothing needs to be "dumbed down", they just need to fix the bugs. OpenGL has been partially broken pretty much since Cat 8.7. Direct3D works a little better but there are still issues with some games.

Both companies have problems, its damn near impossible for each company to cater to every single user, but the selections in your poll are pretty terrible.

For the third option, you suggest ATI drivers have lots of problems, but then say they need to be dumbed down, suggesting people are too dumb to use them. Which one is it? Do the drivers suck or are people too dumb?

BTW, if you want this to have any statistical substance, what so ever, you should have posted it in the general video card forum. Not everyone frequents the ATI subforum.

OH, and before anyone tries to jump down my throat saying im an nV fanboy and blah blah blah flame war crap what ever...go here. Last line, words 3 to 17.

Im clearly an nV troll when i openly admit im considering an ATI 4890 when it becomes available. :rolleyes:

I'm not going to call this an outright flame, but if you had chosen your words a bit more carefully, some of the actual points you made would have been listened to instead of it turning into this.

Arguing back and forth about who's a troll makes you both a troll. This forum runs so well because of the mutual respect the members give to each other, even when they have dissenting opinions. If you can't live to up the excellent standard set by 99% of the members here, you'll find yourself no longer welcome.
