Does Arctic Silver 5 void AMD's warranty?

I read a page that came with my processor from monarch, and it said that the use of metallic thermal compounds can void Monarch's warranty because under certain circumstances they can become electrically conductive.

Would AS5 be such a compound? Would this apply to AMD's warranty?

"yes"

but everyone knows that's stupid. the warrantee is a touchy thing. if you're doing stupid shit and it dies on you, it's your fault, but if you've been using the chip for a few days, temps are fine, and it suddenly quits, i'd say the cpu was defective. i'll probably end up getting flamed for that statement..

lol. I'm with you though, and im pretty sure 99% of non-wankerish people are too. Warranties are hardly to be taken to the letter IMO. In the case of installing/removing it using AS5 and breaking your chip somehow, then thats your fault and you shouldnt RMA it cause your an idiot. If, like you say, youve been using it fine and it just suddenly quits, then thats the CPU/Mobos fault, not your T.I.M.

If anyone wants to flame/disagree, go right ahead, i'll just rest assured in the knowledge that im funkier than you :)

Well if I agree with you would that make me the funkmaster? Another point of mention is that you could use AS 5 Ceramique which is cerarmic based, has nearly as good thermal properties as regular AS 5 and is totally non-conductive. I used it on my A64 and it works quite well for the application.

Warranties always have to protect the company against the worst common denominator but that doesn't mean that they won't bend in the rest of cases. Obviously if the processor was burned from overheating they're going to ask you what thermal compound you used and deny a warranty claim on the basis that you didn't use their stuff. Then again many companies will RMA without regard to condition as they just have strict warranty clauses to cover them from abusive customers who repeatedly smoke their hardware through stupidity. Long and short, I suspect you're not going to run into any issues warranty wise so long as it's not a result of something you did.

well imo, it should extend the warranty hehe, AS5>stock crap..... but hey, ur really not doing anything wrong by putting AS5....it makes the product cooler and they won't know if u applied AS5 anyways...and the life-span should be a bit longer too..so go ahead :)

It would be somewhat difficult to enforce that if you really wanted to sue over it. If you got a decent attorney he could probably file a pretty decent suit using just the "Magnuson-Moss Warranty" Act.

Specifically:
Businessperson's Guide to Federal Warranty Law said:
Generally, tie-in sales provisions are not allowed. Such a provision would require a purchaser of the warranted product to buy an item or service from a particular company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible to receive a remedy under the warranty. The following are examples of prohibited tie-in sales provisions.

In order to keep your new Plenum Brand Vacuum Cleaner warranty in effect, you must use genuine Plenum Brand Filter Bags. Failure to have scheduled maintenance performed, at your expense, by the Great American Maintenance Company, Inc., voids this warranty.

While you cannot use a tie-in sales provision, your warranty need not cover use of replacement parts, repairs, or maintenance that is inappropriate for your product. The following is an example of a permissible provision that excludes coverage of such things.

While necessary maintenance or repairs on your AudioMundo Stereo System can be performed by any company, we recommend that you use only authorized AudioMundo dealers. Improper or incorrectly performed maintenance or repair voids this warranty.

Monarch would have to prove that there was something fundamentally flawed in the installation of your processor and show a convincing argument that Arctic Silver has frequently demonstrated a signifigant risk to your processor's normal function.

Much like GM/Ford/Chrysler cannot void the warranty on your car for using a non-OEM oil filter, I would think Monarch would have a difficult time enforcing that limitation on the warranty.

That having been said, it would probably not be worth the time, effort, and money required to file suit and take it to court. Regardless though, I've used AS in every build I've ever done with no problems.

Not really. The stuff that comes with recent A64 heatsinks is Shin Etsu. While AS5 will always be better than it, the Shin Etsu is no slouch when it comes to simple, easy-to-use performance. The only drawback is that it will be difficult to remove from the heatsink once it has been used.
