Does anyone think that the 9800 GTX is inappropriately named?

Given the performance of this card, I would have expected it to be called the 8800 GTS Extreme Edition. Or 8850 GTS. Or 8870 XTX PE. But 9800 GTX? I mean come on. Real sly marketing, Nvidia. What a dumb name for a dumb card.

I'm sure I'm the first one to think up such a unique topic for a thread too.

it all began with the gts 320 which i thought should have been called the 8800gt. then, the 8800gt could have been named the 8850gt in 1024, 512, or 256 flavors. followed by 8850gts (8800gts 512), 8850gtx (9800gtx), and 8850gx2 (9800gx2). the 8800gs stays the same.

why? 7800 to 7900 was only a die shrink and 7900 to 7950 was about getting rid of inventory.

I don't really think they care what we think, but yeah, imho it is inappropriately named. GTX and Ultra should be reserved for something a bit bigger. I'm not sure how many of them they are going to sell. I can't see too many people dumping 8800GTX/Ultras for them. But, if you don't already have a 8800 series, or are building a pc from scratch today, it is a good option. The price is fair. Slightly more expensive than the 8800GTX, that it slightly out performs most of the time.

Not to mention less heat and power.

If someone makes one more topic on if the 9800GTX is improperly named, im going to scream. We already know its improperly named, their are two topics for this, both made by the same person, one in the main vid card forum, one in the NV section.

Now that I think about it, it should actually be named either: 8900GT or 8900GTS.

current 8800GT = (should be named) 8900XT
8800GTS 512 = 8900GT
9800GTX = 8900GTS

The reason why it does not even deserve to be a GTX is because if it were 8900GTX, we would still assume it to be reasonably faster than an 8800GTX (especially memory bandwidth and amount of RAM). It would need at least 1GB of an equal bandwidth (GDDR4 memory at 256-bit bus) to deserve such a name, despite having 33% less ROP's.

Since I posted in one of the other threads I might as well post it here as well: 8900GSX Hybrid.....

Yea
it should have been named-

"You could have kept your 8800GTX and been happy w/o wasting more time and $ OC Edition"

8600GT, 8800GS, 9600GT, 8800GTS (G80), 8800GT (G92), 8800GTS (G92), 8800GTX (G80), 8800Ultra, 9800GTX, 9800GX2.

Whats eol and whats not? Who the fuck knows! Certainly not the nVidiots!

There's a petition you can sign that is trying to get Nvidia to rename their whole line-up. Who knows, if enough people sign they might do something about it. We already have 80,000+ signatures here and if that doesn't work, then here
