i have a zip drive on the same ide cable as my hard drive, HDD is primary of course,
but,
could the zip drive be slowing down the performance of the HDD by being on the same cable, and it being the secondary?

someone told me it could, and i need a second opinion,

Yes, it can. If you have a secondary IDE chain (with a cdrom or some such on it) it'd be best to move it to that. DVD burners, etc, are slower devices, so they won't be slowed by the slow zip drive.

 
Yes it certainly will.

The zip drive is a slower component than the hard drive. The motherboard chipset will lower the transfer speed on that channel to accommodate the slower (same occurs if you connect optical to HD channel). Remove the zip drive and reinstall on free connector from optical (if you have one). USB thumb drives are great for removable storage.
