Does anyone actually have a Phenom?

Nobody seems to have posted any opinions of this cpu, im assuming nobody has sprung for it

I have a Phenom 9600 installed on an AM2 board (Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe). I recounted my installation experience, my stable settings, and a few benchmarks over in the AMD motherboard section.

As far as stability, I have yet to see anything that I could point my finger at and declare "the erratum!". What I did run into was that I had to relax my memory timings. That may, however, be pretty specific to my memory, motherboard, and BIOS revision.

More here:

well im hoping that asus might release an updated bios for my M2N motherboard but im not holding my breath.

i would probably allready have bought one if i had a motherboard with a compatible bios.

I won't consider an AMD quad-core until all the issues are sorted out and decent clock frequencies are released at a reasonable price range.

Which probably won't be before the end of March. If they don't go bankrupt or get bought out first.

If amd go bankrupt intel have no one to compete against.

It's more likely some company will purchase AMD before that happens. The market is too big for a single player, so someone will come in to fill the vacancy, I'm sure of it.

For people who mostly use their pc for hi-res gaming with filtering, like I do, there is no need to get a high-end cpu...the framerate is about the same from low-end to high-end cpu.

I also have a Asus 790FX mobo sitting here.

I have my eyes set on this mobo since I first saw it.
I still don't know if I will get it for january or if I'll buy a X38.

I agree on that part :D

BTW,isma,it does come with those sexy ram sinks, and yes, they do work well.

Ram temps on my Tracer 8500's @ 1070 4-5-4-10 dropped 8c setup in a 2x1 config.With a 4x1 they were a tough fit but still helped.

not yet im waiting for faster Phenoms to come out and better selection of AM2+ boards coming out. so i can put this old AXP to strictly folding.

Oh boy ! Tracer memory with this mobo must be splendid looking !

Can you post some picks please ? :D

And AM3 cpu will fit on this mobo too !

Very nice rig ! ;)

I have a HD3870 on the way and I will buy buy an another one in january. :)

I'm still deciding on what to do right now, a 9600 Black Edition with the Asus mobo is very tempting...

Maybe someone from Newegg could chime in with some numbers....

But as an NCIX employee in Canada, let me put it this way: The last time I checked, we had around 1k Q6600 processors in our warehouse. At the same time, we only stocked thirty or fourty-something 9500s.

thanks :)

Now just to decide if i want to take on watercooling.. or just find a better air cooler.. anyone know what will fit on this ASUS M3A board??

We (wife and I) dont have a digi. :) All the pics I have posted have been with a borrowed Fujifilm F40fd

hmm the phenom is still stupidly expensive over here, is it actually faster then an x2 with day to day usage and responsiveness?

Honestly,it seemed just as fast as my oc'd Q6600 in Windows XP SP2 and 3D gaming (Bioshock,Q4,SC)

It was only when I actually benchmarked it,was it noticeably slower. :(

Here in Canada,a retail Phenom 9500 can be had for cheap (242 $ Cdn)

From what I have seen the phenom is about 10% to 15% percent faster at best then the X2 clock for clock.

hmm i dont really think its worth it with the current prices over here. you are talking $380 us for the 9600.

I'm waiting for a new stepping and for the whole Phenom-on-AM2-mobo issue to be settled. The current processors seem too hot, and I don't want to buy a new mobo just to find out Abit's gonna release a Phenom-compatible BIOS for their old motherboards.

+1 and at only a slight increase i dont think i will bother.

The current processors seem too hot...

Really? Maybe this comment is in relation to the TDP of non-released versions (i.e. 2.4+ Ghz) or overclocked Phenoms?

For my 9600 on my Asus M2N SLI Deluxe I was able to use the Zalman 9500 that I previously used on an X2 3800+ (89W version). I don't see much difference in the reported temperatures on my motherboard. Right now my CPU is sitting at about 26°C and after crunching some video I've seen it up around 45°C.

desert can you actually notice a performance improvement in day to day tasks?

I guess the question is what is an "everyday task". I do notice better performance over my X2 3800+, but that should not be too surprising since I was only running it at stock. For games I believe it gets me to the point that my GPU is now the bottleneck, but a fast X2 can do that as well.

One would expect, however, to see the biggest improvements with software that will tax all four of the cores, like video encoding. As I related over in a post over in the AMD motherboard section, I think DivX may need some tweaks to take full advantage of Phenom. My encode time on a 1 GB VOB file (480P) in VirtualDub went from 26.5 minutes on the X2 down to around 19.5 minutes on the Phenom. Not as good as I expected since I'm adding two cores, but when I looked at my task manager, the Phenom cores were not even close to running at 100% (more like 50%). Some sort of optimization seems to be needed there. The best way of getting near full load on the Phenom 9600 so far has been Windows Media Encoder x64 edition when converting AVI to high rez (1280x720, 5mbps) WMV. That will get overall CPU load up to about 90%. I never bothered to bench it that way on the X2 3800+, though, so I can't tell how much of an improvement that makes. It just makes me happy to know I can get that much load on the 9600 and that my AM2 board isn't holding it back from that.

But improvement on everyday tasks? I doubt most people will notice much difference on web surfing, office suites, etc. going from a dual core to a quad, regardless of the chip maker. My main motivation for going with the Phenom 9600 was to speed up video encodes. It has done that, but I'm hoping DivX will be tweaked to get even better performance out of the Phenom.

comparing how many people bought a phenom on release compared to a intel chip

I wonder if AMD will allow people to RMA the "Bad" processors for the fixed ones.
