Does anyone actually ever get SATA 2 speeds?

In a word - no. The fastest mechanical drives only hit about a hundred megabytes per second these days. Unless you're using a ramdisk or port multipliers, 3 gbps is all bling and no help.

i just get about 138MB/s max out of my SATA II raid 0 , but thats it :(

Sustained, no. Burst - the cache can deliver data at speeds well above 150MB/s - my Hitachi 80GB can burst to 274MB/s in HD Tach with, IIRC, 32KB blocks of data.

For about 29 milliseconds (8 megs of cache / 274 MB/s). Then you're down to the media transfer rate, which Hitachi specs at a max of 61 MB/s. And that's only when you get the whole buffer full of data that just happens to get requested again by the OS. Right now XP is keeping about 250MB of cached stuff from disk in memory for me. I get about 4 GB/s to main memory in benchmarks. Thus, 8 megabytes of cache that are accessible over sata, no matter what generation, is relatively irrelevant when the OS is keeping such a large cache accessible so much faster than the on-disk cache. This reduces the likelihood that any blocks will be requested twice from disk; the OS is smart enough to not ask for things it already has.

game14: That's two channels of sata (or N channels, if you have more than two disks). That means each channel is only carrying 69 MB/s or so at one time, with room for 300 MB/s each. So you're not even close to running into 1.5gbps limitations.

nop ...not even close !!! :( dont know where the problem is , but my HDD are definitly the bottleneck in my system . If u got an idea how to speed them up please let me know .

mmm with HDTach i get 281mb/s for my RAID 0 , guess the 138mb/s i get with Sandra is for one drive only , strange
but anyways still way too slow :(
