Does adaptive multisampling decrease performance for games it doesn't work on?

For instance, I heard adaptive AA doesn't work in DX10/11 titles, will I still get a performance hit if I try enabling it in, say, The Witcher 2?

I'm not sure. But why leave something enabled if it doesn't work? And if you can't tell a difference between it working or not so as to leave it on just in case, then why take the performance hit in the first place?

Just wanted to know if I had to keep enabling/disabling when I switch between Dead Space 2/Skyrim and Witcher 2
