Does a splitter affect surround sound?

I was just wondering as I have a 5.1 pioneer surround system hooked up to my comp and wanted to know if the jack that turns the headphone output into RCA is affecting the quality of the sound.

Is there a better way for me to connect my speakers considering that they are not computer speakers but double as the surround sound for my tv/dvd too?
 
Should be fine, unless it has a lot of tarnish/corrosion and such.

BTW: The center, bass and sub channels all go through one jack, if you use a standard stereo style jack you will likely get crackling and popping from the not so compatible types of plugs/jacks.
 
Make sure your 'connector' is high quality, and yeah that one output could be an issue for connectivity...
 
well its a long RCA with a :ashamed: radio shack headphone to RCA connector. There is nothing else plugged in, nothing for bass center or anything, should there be more than that?

i'm kinda n00bish on this whole deal but im interested in making it work as best as possible because im plannin to buy an x-fi soon i wanna get things ready.

That depends on you.... if you are happy with ProLogic, ProLogic2 or Neo6 matrixed surround sound one cable is enough.
If not then you need three of those mini to RCA cables.

And yes the cable quality does matter but it's not as important as keeping the cable short as possible.

Lemme tell you what I have and maybe u can help me.

Out of the computer I have one of these

That connects to a 12 foot RCA cable and plugs into the CD input or the reciever of this

Those go to the 5.1 pioneer speakers.

You are not going to get surround out what you described. Only 2 channel, or some really lame old Analog Dolby Surround that is not used in anything anymore unless it's completely ghetto. You need either one Optical, one Coax, or one RCA per channel running from the source to the receiver. 5.1 uses 6 RCAs. That's what I have on my system, and it works great. It get expensive after a few channels. :eek:

Thank you, thats what I was wondering. So could u give me a few links to some of these connections that im gonna need?
 
Well, the splitter and the RCA cables are what you are after. You just need two more sets. I personally like the y cables that split the mini plug into two RCA's directly, so as to minimize the amount of connections and adapters being used. I'd buy three of those, then you hook them into the recievers analog in's. It should have a full set. Mine is labbeled DVD, I guess some DVD players directly feed the audio like we are doing.

If you are getting sound out of all of your speakers it's because your receiver is using an algorithm of some kind to make more channels, and the placement of sounds won't match a true 5.1 feed. As far as the headphone gadget you also have, maybe get an adapter while you are out getting those Y cables that switches the fat headphone plug to a normal one and just use the receiver. Optional, again, less connectors and all this other stuff. Just get the sound out to that amp the most direct way possible. Meh, if you use a headset with mic I guess the radio shack thing is handy.

But that doesn't really do you much good because you will still only get two channels of audio in games if you use one with an X-fi that has a drive bay
(the standard X-fi does not have a optical port)

alright, seems like I'm getting somewhere. I'm gonna need more mini to RCA cables to run for the center, sub, left and right channls correct?
 
Yep. I suggest going with 3 sets of matching adapters/cables. You would want to use the shortest RCA cables that will make the distance. It's more important to have matching sets than it is to have some pieces be higher quality. So if you're going to get more RCA's and adapters get more like you have or get a whole set of better stuff. The radio shack stuff is not bad, but if the cables need to be long, you should consider upgrading to something like monster cable to offset the affect of the wire resistance.
