Does a pci controller card really help?

So I set up a server with some old spare parts and as I am copying files over to it I notice that it is taking much longer than normal. I find out the mobo only has ata66 onboard. So my question is, since the pci bus only communicates at 66, will I notice a difference if I add a ata100 controller card?

And am I just imaging that it is taking longer to write files, or is there a noticable difference between ata100 and ata66?

pci is probably 33 mghz, but that aside, you can still get ata 100 rates but chances are you will saturate the pci bus with everything else on it,

but wouldn't raid cards do the same? and i have seen raid cards in all kinds of computers and they always run fine.

yeap, you can run into issues like i had, where with large file transfers, the sound wound stutter and be buggy

well it would all depend on the pci ata card now would it ;)

i dont think the drive on a ata66 controller would make a difference.. the drives rarely will be doing that speed...

as far as the pci bus is concerned.. if you are using it for network xfers, given that you have a 100mbit network.. max is 12mb/sec, then 12 mb/sec back to the drive, only 24 mb/sec. Not much imo (given that you arent using a pci video card and you are watching some movie or something)

So why do they make ata133 cards if there isn't any performance gain?

the number is bigger so people buy them.

There are other reasons to buy them, for example if your motherboard doesnt have LBA48 support, and you want to use a hd over 137gb. Or if you are out of onboard slots, etc.
