Does a burnt or fried processor show visual evidence?

My computer wouldnt post. I narrowed it down to the motherboard or the CPU. Just to be sure, I RMA'd the motherboard. I probably wont see it for another week or so, but Im still worried that it might actually be the CPU. I dont have another computer to put the CPU into to test. The PSU is fine as far as I know.
Anyways, I just want to know if its possible to see if a CPU is burnt. Thanks

If the CPU fails, it may or may not show physical evidence of its damage. ESD damage is not visible, for example; damage caused by poor cooling usually is.
