Quick question: does a 4790 (non-K) have the same TIM in 4790K?

Has anyone actually delidded a non-K 4790?

hard to know... even if its the same colour but i doubt it will be the same as that chip run cool enough at stock speed and without being able to overclock i guess intel may want to save that money and put cheap paste to non K chips..

Don't recall ever hearing of anyone de-lidding a 4790 to find out, but according to Intel, the new NGPTIM was to be a feature exclusive to Devil's Canyon (4790k and 4690k)..

For the price, just spend the extra $30 for the unlocked SKU and enjoy the 400MHz bump and that sweet, sweet TIM ;)

Thanks guys. Yeah it's too late. Got the 4790 non-K already. Idle's high 30s in my Shuttle SZ87R6 with a 280x card.

That doesn't seem too bad, given their cooler design. The magical TIM on my 4790k only gives me at best ~5C lower temps at idle vs my 4770k (high-30s down to mid-30s with the same cooler/build).

I really don't think us SFF guys using small air coolers will be getting those same amazing near-ambient 20C idle temps that many reviewers are reporting. De-lidding would probably be just as beneficial to us, as it is to the guys that overclock.

I swapped a 4790 for a 4790k today. I noticed a 5C drop in temps. No delid, OC, or any scientific analysis. I'd bet different TIM from my limited experience.

Was the voltage the same between the two processors?

I didn't even check! The 4790 ran in the low thirties at stock. The 4790k runs in the high twenties at stock. In games 4790 topped out at 50C. The 4790k tops out at 40-45C. My guess is 4970k has better TIM and voltage regulation. Not a ton of difference at stock settings.
