do you think this storage setup is feasible?

ok, im building a new box, with my drives set up like this:

my mobo is an NF7-S, 2 PATA channels, 2 SATA channels

For my main system drive, I will be using a slightly old (i.e. a year or two old) 20 GB WD drive (7200 RPM), as my Pri Master.

On my second PATA channel, master, I will have a Pioneer 106 DVD-RW.

On one of my SATA channels, I will have a 160 GB Seagate 7200.7 Barracuda. This drive will be used only for storage.

The other device I have is a DVD-ROM, and I am not sure where to place it for best results.

Please note that I will have a second computer to work with also (a very decent 800 MHz P3, 512 MB RAM), and am contemplating putting the DVD-RW on that box (its more than capable of burning DVDs), so that I can burn DVDs and shit while still being able to do normal stuff on my main box.

well id like to get the most performance I can, since I'm dropping hundreds of $$$ ($1200, to be specific) on this new computer

How fast is that 20gig drive? (not the rpm, since we already know that) access time, seek time, etc..
I like to have a very fast drive as the system drive, makes the computer run faster.
I run very fast 18gig SCSI drives on all my machines as the system drives, machines seem peppier than most peoples machines with faster procs.

Put the DVD-ROM as slave on secondary with the DVD-RW

CD drives run at UDMA/33 while hard drives run at UATA/66/100/133, but there can be only one speed per cable, which is the slowest available

(99% sure on this crap)

I'd say put the dvd-rw in your new box - it's a hassle *moving* to just burn a stupid cd... I wouldn't worry about lag while burning on a new system.

Well my system drive is a 20 Gig WD Caviar. I COULD get a 37 gig raptor, but that's just too much cash for that little performance :(

And to the guy that told me to put all optical drives on the same IDE channels, thanks, I didnt know that :)

Hmm you are right that it's no fun moving my data over every time I want to burn a DVD-- if I had a Gbit connection connecting the two boxes, it would be fine, but you do have a good point. While it takes about a minute to move a CDs worth of data across a 100mbit link, a DVD is a whole nother story...

Whats probably going to happen is-- I already have a CD-RW in my older box, and I'll just use it to burn CDs (its a 10x burner so no worries there), and put the DVD-RW into my new box.

So here is the drive setup then:

NEW BOX:

System Drive: 20 GB WD Caviar @ 7200 RPM on IDE Pri Channel Master
Storage Drive: 160 GB Seagate 7200.7 'cuda on SATA 1
DVD-ROM: IDE Secondary Master
DVD-RW: IDE Secondary Slave

OLD BOX:

System Drive: 20 GB WD Caviar (slightly older model, still 7200 RPM) on IDE Pri Channel Master
Possible Storage Drive: 60-80 GB Seagate Barracuda on Pri Slave
CD-RW: IDE Sec Master

w00t this looks like it'll work nicely

thanks to all that replied :)

personally, if it was me, i'd put the two hdd's on the sata channels, and have the cd/dvd's on two seperate channels.
You'll get maximum performance out of each drive.
