I received my second 8800GTX last night and slapped it in not realizing that my Enermax Liberty 620 only had two 12V rail plugs. No problem I thought since adding up the max Wattage of the all the parts including the second GTX came out to 422. So I used one 12v rail for each card and an included 4pin molex to 6pin PCIE adapter for the the remaning 6pin on each card. The molex adapters do not share a cable with any other components and so far everything seems ok. Wires don't get hot, the PSU isn't letting off any extreme amounts of heat, and the computer isn't shutting off.
Well, I run 3DMark06 and the computer shuts off during the Canyon scene about halfway through. This happens twice but never happened during the hour or so of gameplay of HL2, Crysis, NFS Pro Street or Gears Of War. I tried running just the Canyon test in 3DMark06 and in the same spot where the cannons are shooting at the sea dragon, it turns off. I'm starting to think that this is a bug and not a power issue. The SLI meter wasn't even full when this happened. I would assume that if power were an issue that it would have cut off early on in the tests.
I'm all for buying a new PSU and I have my eyes on a Silverstone 1000W for 319 with a $100 rebate from Newegg but I'd rather not spend another $300 if I don't really have to. Outside of this canyon scene I have yet to have any issues. Any thoughts guys?
I wish I had the tools to see just how much power this thing is draining. I'l try looping Crysis benchmarks if that's even possible to see if it killls it.
