Do you really need it?

I was just wondering. Quite a few of the Notebook sites I have been to I have noticed how everyone wants the fastest this and the biggest that. Is it because they really need to be a second or to faster than the next person? or is it because they can have braggin rights? or is it because they want the best now so their notebook will not be outdated in a few weeks? It seems few use it for their jobs or big applications that they need that kind of power. I have a IBM R40 1.3 PM /512 ram and a HP 3.0 p4 with HT and 768 ram. My sister is a Doctor and she uses her Sony for work. I compared mine and hers and I don't see a hell of a lot of difference in performance. Maybe if I get a stopwatch I may be able to see an difference but as for speed and overall performance it seems pretty close. She paid about 2500 for hers. I don't think its worth the grand more that she paid for the sony compared to my HP. Just my opinion.

I have an XPS... I think that may make me king of the "I want it all..." crowd.

I could list all kinds of clever rationalizations about why I bought the XPS but it really comes down to this. I needed a powerful portable computer, I had the money, so I bought a portable gaming computer. I enjoy it, I like showing it off, Its paid for :), I have found that it is actually perfect for work as well. It is faster and more capable than the desktop computers here at the office. I can run Websphere, Oracle 9i and Eclipse, office and god knows what else without a hiccup. But I could have done all this with a 9100, all the professional stuff with just about any modern laptop with plenty of ram. The justifications are great but it comes down to this, I wanted it and my wife didn't stand in my way :)

I got the brass ring... and it is pretty.

its all that stuff. bragging rights are big, having the best is really nice, and spending money can be fun too.

I guess I'm the opposite, I bought an ultraportable (Asus s5n), smallest laptop I could find, slowest dothan processor (715) but I did upgrade the ram and the HD to a 5400 ... and it actually compares numbers and performance wise to my desktop (via SiSoft Sandra benchmarks :))

My laptop isn't the fastest in the world, but its perfect for my needs

Inspiron 8100,
15 inch LCD
512 mb RAM
Geforce4Go
40 gb hard disk
P3 1.2 ghz

Well it all comes down to what you need to use your system for in my oppinion...

Personally I am just about ready to start College (starts on the 7th of September) and I only have one computer to use all the time I am in college...

Now the program I am taking we will be running VMWare which is a program that allows you to run varoius operating systems in a window (at the same time as your primary OS) and this takes extra processing power and tons of memory. I need some power to keep up (a celeron with 256mb of memory just isn't going to cut it).

Additionally I enjoy playing games sometimes and the cheaper models come with Intel Extreme graphics and whatnot which really don't even have any chance of running any of the new games.

I ended up buying my laptop about a year ago because I needed a computer then and so I have a Toshiba Tecra S1 1.4Ghz (Pentium -M) with a 30 gig HDD, DVD reader and 14.1" 1024x768 TFT display. Overall this computer has some decent core features and still works allright (doom 3 puts it through it's paces for sure). I upgraded the memory from 256mb to 768mb, bought an external USB 2.0 CD-writer and got a 200 GIG external HDD for storage and I feel i'll be set.
