Do you own a Backup PSU?

I picked up two 850 watt psu like 3-4 years ago one EVGA and a Corsair. Bought a 1000 watt 3.1 MSI which was bundled 5080 which I refuse to use. The changing cable standard with every new release makes me want to just wait it out.

Trying to decide if I really should buy a cable mod cable for my Corsair but if the standard goes away or I never get around to needing it would be a waste.

I always keep several. The two of note are a Seasonic 850w Focus Platinum(don't remember the exact model tbh) and an EVGA 1300 G2. The rest are 550-700w units from my building days (in case a client happens to need one while under warranty). The other two are prior to the 3.0/3.1 standards. My current FSP (3.1)has every cable needed. It'll handle anything I throw at it and some. Still has 9 years of warranty. So I think I can probably manage one way or another until the replacement shows up. Knock on wood.

Why are you holding back on the MSI unit? They generally use solid OEMs.

Old house with old breaker box. Plus I have my speakers hooked up cell phone humidifier and Radio same circuit. Plus a fan I run for white noise. If I move somewhere else I'll use it.

Not really. I have a couple extra power supplies that could work in a pinch but running a 5090, I doubt I'd use one as I don't want to deal with adapters to 12 pin power. I'd just run up to Microcenter and buy a new unit if I was in a hurry or order one from Amazon etc. I have other computers and going a day or two without my main rig wouldn't be a big deal.

No, in this age of Amazon and to a lesser extent, Best Buy and Walmart, if a critical component fails I'll have its replacement in 24 hours.

I only have a TFX one sitting 'extra' in the closet from my old WMC server/NAS, my 'spare' ATX one went into my HTPC with the rest of my 'spare/old parts', but as I just mentioned elsewhere..... the 'spare' ATX one is getting up there in age......

I have 5 backup PSU of varying spec. From 600w to 1000W.

Through a result of tinkering, trading, selling ,buying and hording I have to admit that I have entire backup PCs as well as spares for most parts of said PCs. Its not really by design but a side effect of all these things.. This current market is probably one of the only times all my gear lying around seems like its worth it!

Short answer: Yes

The answer to this really should depend on what your use case for your PC is. If your PC is just for gaming or non-serious business use where a failure can be mitigated another way, there's no reason to spend extra money on parts. If your system is business critical you should have various spare parts on hand, not just a PSU. Honestly, PSU's don't fail all that often compared to other parts. After selling a couple that were replaced due to age, I currently have three here; 1x spare, 1x that needs to be sold, and 1x that's going in an unfinished system.

I had one psu fail. IT was the stock version included in my Raidmax atx case lasted 7-8 years from like 2002-2009

Man it is miserable building a PC without any sort of spare components. I was driven insane for a week because I couldn't find out what my issue was and I had no way of simply swapping out a part to test. (RAM that came with my newegg bundle deal didn't work with my MOBO (Awful to try and find out if this was due to BIOS version not supporting CPU, CPU issue, or memory issue)) (New monitor's displayport cable would cause PC to lose power) (NZXT PSU I got from amazon wouldn't work when I used the 12VHPWR cable. Worked perfectly fine on a new Corsair PSU though)

Honestly I wouldn't recommend it to other people I just tell them to get a pre-built. If you don't have 2 of each part I don't feel like it is worth the effort. Building PCs for my job was fine and chill, diagnosing issues was straightforward. Doing it for myself? Never again without spare parts.

Not deliberately backup, but yes, I have one or two (or three? maybe 5) PSU's sitting in the basement parts closet. So far, knock wood, I've only had to replace one PSU and that was because the fan was getting noisy, not because it failed.

Not that I'd actually use in any of my machines. I just have some old junk in the basement. I have more than one machine though, so I can move parts around to test.

I wanted to get rid if a 750 watt Evga with 5 years on it so I gave it to Goodwill.

I still own another 750 watt but really not a 5080 psu. I just wish I knew what power plug form factor Nvidia will stick with. Since PCIE or Molex is out the door.

Just picked up black and green Cable mod cable could of just picked up another psu with 3.1 but rather go the cheaper route.
Hopefully Nvidia doent change their power plug with the 6000 series in 2-3 years.

No in part because of cost, I like nice efficient Titanium units which are a lot to have an extra one of, but also because capacitors age just sitting around. So an extra PSU would be literally sitting around slowly dying. Also that does me no good if another component fails.

My 10 year old EVGA 1300W G2 is the backup PSU. I have a 12VHPWR cable for it as well.

Have three cap-modded BFG EX-1000 PSUs (from the i7 4770K days)
Two as spares, one running a 7950X + 3080 Ti setup

I used to, not anymore though. It was doing basic light duty in my dad's PC with a Seasonic 650 Focus in-box ready for action.
Sadly, once I upgraded dad's PC to an i7-3770 the poor CX430 promptly died, and I have too much on my plate to fix it at the moment. It's not exactly worth it, I think. 13-year old 430 just doesn't cut the cheese.
Gotta remove dad's nicotine from it and maybe find the culprit optically.

So, while I did have a spare that saved my ass, I no longer have one and will have to gear up come the end of the month. In case my RAM fails, I can jettison one 8GB stick. If my NVME dies, I can quickly switch to one that has a clone of my current OS and basic software. If my mobo/CPU fail, I'm dead in the water.

I don't have a proper GPU, so it's not biggie if I get something lightweight, as long as it's a reputable OEM.

Edith: One thing I always do with them Seasonics is disabling the fan hybrid mode. I want it spinning all the time, even at minimum loads, because the only hot pocket I want is the snack.

Well, a full secondary side re-cap candidate, kind of pointless to work on.

So your first post on [H] is about having a whole lot of "backup" PSUs? Obviously we're wondering how much other "backup" gear you have lol. You running a business or something? That's a lot of spare PSUs for a home user.

Haha! I admit, it's a bit odd to have that many PSUs.
