Do you NEED thermal paste?

In a pinch. Could I run my CPU and GPU without thermal paste between them and the heatsink?

GF2Ti
XP 2100+

can you get thermal grease at Lowe's? none of the office* have it I'm sure. and i can't think of a place that would have it

by god. i can't believe i forgot ratshack!

i guess they are good for something (computer wise anywys..)

damn. gotta waittill tomorrow then

thanks

Thermal paste can lower the temp 5+ degrees C. Up to 15 or so id say. Ive run procs without it fine for a long time. But given the price, no reason not to have it.

Any computer store should have thermal paste, heck even free on some occaisions.

Yeah, I don't trust the ratshack stuff. I had a bad experience, involving flames, an 1800+, and an expensive motherboard. But, thats probably my fault :p

Ya sure that 3v VCore you were trying to use didn't have something to do with it ?? :)

The stuff we have at RadioShack is standard silicon paste. If you can wait 2 days get some good stuff off of newegg. It will help, ALOT. If your not OC-ing (I don't know why you wouldn't) the stuff at RS will do fine, much better than nothing.

You Lucky @#$% ... its $9.95 here locally... so if your in a pinch then you gotta pay, otherwise you can just order it online for a little cheaper... not much after shipping tho.

Edit: but in answer to your question, its definately not needed. I had my stock HSF on this p4a 2.4 @ 2.8 without any. BUT... that said when I did finally put some on, load temps went down ~5C.

edit edit: well I take that back, now that I think about it, the stock parifin wax termal pad was on there before the AS5 so dunno.... but I cant believe wax would do much for temps.. *shrug*

Try radioshack.

No you should not ever run your pc without some sort of thermal interface material between the CPU and Heatsink. That was just bad advise my friend.

Rex, I mean you no disrepect but why don't you clean off your TIM and run your PC at load for a few hours? Would you honestly not use a Thermal medium yourself? I doubt you would.

G-daddy, just get some thermal pastes anywhere even if its generic, thats far better than running the risk of frying your processor ;)

My swap computer is an A 1.4, with a cheap hs/fan. computer for swaping parts, been running 16 hours a day, 7 days a week for 4 months now with no thermal paste. Used for gaming with americas army, medieval, and eh..oh bf 1942. )rarely)

Dozens of PC's ive swaped cpus from would have been better off WITHOUT thermal paste because if its incorrectly applied, its worthless (or worse than nothing) .
7 of 10 procs have gobs of grease all over em. Hell ive seen a proc completely covered in it. (im refering to athlons, dont get as many p4's/celerons)

Well, you really should use some sort of thermal interface material between your CPU and heatsink be it a paraffin wax thermal pad, silicon thermal paste, or the good stuff (AS3/5, AS Ceramiqué, etc.).

BTW, you should be able to get various kinds of thermal paste locally at places like:
Fry's Electronics
CompUSA
BestBuy
Radio Shack
random local computer shops
etc.

I usually get my stuff (lights, heatsinks, fans, TIM, etc.) from either SVC or Case-Mod because I can just drive down there and pick up my order instead of paying for shipping.

Out of the places you listed, only one is available locally. Add Circuit City, they carry thermal paste now as well.

I use the generic radiosmack stuff. got an 800mhz oc on my processor with it too. so I can't complain, and I can't see why everyone lays the smack down on it since I can't see much of a difference between it and AS3. My temps only changed by about 1degree...

Radiosack sells a decent thermal paste. much better than other non AS paste.

Yes. Not since the 486 that a TIM wasn't required really. Now it is critical to occupy the air pockets in the crevices of the mating surfaces with something more thermally conductive than O2.

You can get away with not using a TIM. I have done it many times in the process of troubleshooting or testing out CPUs and Boards. Is it OK for long term use? I certainly wouldn't recommend it. But if you want to do it for a couple days, it shouldn't be a problem as long as the HSF is properly seated. It still wouldn't be a bad idea to at least pick up some of the generic white silicone grease though.

I'm going to have to disagree. My Athlon 950 SLOT-A had no such TIM and is still running. I had a K6-2 400MHz which required no such TIM. My daughter currently has a P4 Celeron 1.7GHz which has zero thermal compound on it. None of these computer have it and it is not necessary for running the computer. However, that said, I do agree that using a TIM will increase the effeciancy of your heatsink, but, it is not essential to it's operation.

yeah, what about the store where u bought the 2100+? wouldn't they have it?

Cause I bought the 2100+ about a year ago and I've since lost the thermal paste I got then.

I'm not Ocing cause I don't trust myself :( I ended up running to Ratshack. 2.50 or something.

Moral of Story: 8 beeps = bad video card :(

I've run Celerons without heatsinks before. Intel CPU's will probably be fine without a HSF, because as thermal protection kicks in, the CPU will not get voltage and reboot the system or will recduce IPC to a level where the CPU will survive.

Most of those processors are much cooler than modern CPUs anyway.

I'm sure you have a Best Buy around you somewhere, I noticed that they started carrying some generic silver paste so you could try that.

As I said ealier, there aren't many stores around me. Just Circuit City and Ratshack. No best buy here. Some people live in the boonies with nothing around, so Ratshack silicon thermal paste is your best bet. I perfer AS3 myself.
