Hey guys, I have a Gigabyte X800XT VIVO edition ( decided to keep it ) Anyways, this thing isnt much of an OCer, but i'd like to hit atleast PE speeds. I have an Arctic Silencer 4 on it right now, and the temps are fine. Power is good ( OCZ powerstream 520w 12.03 on 12v load )...so everything checks out. The card itself just doesn't wanna OC though. I had the same problem when I had my old 9800 nonpro ( before I got a real pro for some odd reason ) Anyways, before, the 9800np would only hit 370/330 before I got artifacts/lockups. Then I built up the balls to flash the card to a Pro ( 380/340 stock ) Everything worked out great! I was able to hit 460/380 after that! So...do you guys think I should flash my card to a X800XT PE?

Actually, there's been some speculation that the Pro VIVO >>> XTPE mod will drastically shorten the life of your card. Like, shorten as in your card will die within 6 months. I have not personall experienced this (thankfully, and never will) but there have been a few topics around here about people's XT mod going bad on them. I say no.

Yeah i'm going from an XT to an XT PE....is there a way to flash it through windows? I'm lacking a floppy drive

I just got a floppy, cna someone give me a step by step guide to flashing the card. I totaly forgot how to do this.

Dude, don't flash your card. You'll never notice the difference between a XT and a XTPE anyway- it's trivial.

Flashing the card isn't going to kill it, jesus christ just do it, find out if you get a better OC, and if not, flash back. It's not a big deal!

download flashrom from the bottom of this page and then download the bios of your choice .. make sure it's AGP ... if your card is AGP

Put it in a bootable floppy then boot from floppy

type this ..

flashrom -s 0 X800xt.bin

( current bios)

then when that is done type

flashrom -p 0 "newbios".bin

(newbios being the bios you downloaded .)

if it complains and says your sn number does not match then retype the second line with -f i believe ..

You can use Atitool also to backup your previous bios ... use dump bios it's somewhere in there

How do I make a bootable floppy ( lol i'm tellin ya...its been a while )

So I use ATiTool to backup my current bios, put that in the floppy, along with the new bios incase something goes wrong. IF something does go wrong, what do i type?

No not at all. The mere fact that he asked when this is posted in [H]ardforums makes me think there is more than one reason why he wants a second opinion.

And who says flashing cant hurt your card, I've seen people screw their shit up big time but forcing the card or tricking it.

Since he already tried, this is a dead issue anyway. I suppose better to know by trying than not to know cause your a softy.

Besides, we're all as Hard our wallets can afford.

Well you should've o/c your card to PE speeds and checked if it would work at that speed without artifacts ... if it did then you would've known it would work.

If it did work at PE speeds but it won't work after flashing then forget all about flashing it and just o/c it to PE speeds and more if you can.

Well this is wierd...when I restart my computer w/ the new bios, it keeps saying "new device found: MEDIA" I reinstalled the cats also...

Dude, i fixed it. i had the exact same problem and tv and everything works now. Its really simple, and i feel kind of stupid for missing it. here is what you do.

a. install catalyst drivers as you normally would, the error will pop up, click ok.
b. reboot when it asks you
c. move entire contents of the driver support folder (found usually at "c:\ati\support\NAME OF DOWNLOAD\")to windows ->system32
d. go to the device manager (right click my computer -> properties -> hardware tab )
e. look under the "sound, video and game controllers" section (click the + sign on the left to see whats under it)
f. right click the first driver that has a WDM in front of it and right click -> update driver
g. click the install from a specific location, click next.
h. click the "include this location in the search" and make sure the path is the one that has the *copied* drivers in it (c:\windows\system32)
i. click next and xp will do the work. DO NOT RESTART

Repeat the steps for each device that has WDM in front of it. Restart when all are completed.

**you could also try moving all the drivers to system32 and then installing, i haven't tryed this so it may not work, but it would be a hell of a lot easier and faster.****

On a side note, i think ATI should clean up their act. their customer service is lousy at best, and i think we deserve more. This process takes a lot of time and i think ati should just fix it or post a better way to do it

I'm not sure if he was talking about moving the stuff to system32/drivers or just system32

give it a try but most of the people with that problem fixed it by re-installing windows ... not too sure if you wanna try that ...

try Driver cleaner and see how that works
