Do you foresee any problems with my future system? Here are the specs:

Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI ~$170
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512K L2 Cache Socket 939 Venice 90nm ~$260
RAM: Corsair TWINX1024-4400C25PT 1GB Kit DDR550 XMS4400 Memory w/Platinum Heat Spreader ~$216
Graphics: connect3D 3025 Radeon X850XTPE 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card ~$470
Hard Drives: WD 10,000 RPM Raptor 74GB ~$176
Case: Coolermaster Centurion 5 ~$85
Power Supply: Seasonic S12-500 S12 Series 500W 500 Watt ATX ~$105
Fan: Zalman CNPS7000B-CU ~$36
Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver Ceramique Thermal Compound ~$5
TOTAL: ~$1523

To do:
DVD+-RW Drive (I have done no research on this yet)
LCD Monitor (maybe that dell 24incher if I feel like wasting even more money, but most likely a nice and fast 21 incher)

By the way, thank you for the great forum, its been very informative to look around at everyone else's specs and pieceing together what I like.

That'll fly to Venus and back. :D I'm not gonna rant and rave about how you need to change this and that. Your specs will rock!

Cool, thanks! My main concern is with the RAM and with the case, I want to make sure I'm getting a decent enough case, and by decent I mean quiet and reasonably cool (I'm not gonna overclock). The RAM, there's so many different configurations for it and I dont really care all that much, so I'm just going with what I noticed someone else posted for their system with my same mobo. Will my power supply fit in my case?

Also, I think I'm gonna order everything in one big shipment from newegg (as soon as they get the memory in stock, and as soon as I get my next paycheck). Will I get a significant discount for my shipping doing this?

Whoa, whoa, whoa... You buyin' all that fancy stuff and are NOT going to O/C? Then yer wastin' yer cash, bud. Newegg ain't gonna discount yer shipping much, if any. Seriously though, if you're for sure NOT going to O/C, then look around the forums to find better deals for some of your components. Especially the RAM...

Well from what I've read overclocking your system by 300 or 400 MHz isnt going to significantly improve performance. The burden of the gaming performance should come from the video card, right?

Thank you for the good link for the video card, is the 7800 really that much better, though?

Here's what I've found for the memory, I believe this will be compatible with my system, correct?
CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System Memory $336

Well, mainly I was talking about your RAM, 'cause that stuff is too expensive to just be running at stock speeds. Grab the Corsair Valueselect instead. You will NOT notice a performance difference and you'll save yourself $150 to grab that bad-boy 7800GTX. :p Seriously, read around the web on the reviews of the card and I think you'll be convinced. If you can O/C your processor 300 or 400 more mhz, you'll notice a difference when gaming. That's a nice chunk of improvement. If you're NOT going to O/C your processor, don't waste money on an aftermarket CPU cooler. Even if you stuck with the stock cooler, you could still O/C your CPU modestly. Anyway... just like you said, the video card is going to be your biggest factor in most games. So get you a 7800GTX and enjoy. :D

Ok so what's the difference between this one: (184 pin)
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820145505

and this one (that you suggested): (240 pin)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145527

How will the number of pins affect performance? Or is it compatibility?

Do you guys think that the stock speeds of my hardware will affect my gaming experience for any game that comes out over the next couple of years? (I can understand the need for overclocking after that amount of time)

And how's this card?

For non OC grab this RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145527

and a 7800gtx. You don't need fancy ram for stock speeds.

Edit: yah, stock speeds = leave retail on.

This will not be compatible with the motherboard he plans on purchasing. I don't believe AMD has a DDR2 solution, yet. They will next year. So the RAM you're quoting here is for Intel stuff only.

You'll want the 184-pin stuff. The 240 won't even fit into your MOBO's DIMM slots. DDR2 is Intel-only at the moment. With the setup you want and the 7800GTX, you should be golden for a couple years. And of course, down the line you can O/C your system even WITH the value RAM. Just not a TON of O/C. I guess it depends on how much money you want to spend now to get performance later...

Cool so I'll buy a couple of those 184 pin 1GB ones.

There's a sale going on the PC case today, so I'll buy that. Any comments on it before I make the purchase?

Sweet deal on the Centurion! It's gotten good reviews from different sites. Try looking at www.insanetek.com, www.bigbruin.com, the list goes on...

Other than that, you'll enjoy the new rig. Immensely. :D

Do you think the 10000 RPM WD Raptor is worth it? 70GB for now is enough for me, I was mostly interested in the hard drive's speed. But will it be excessively noisy? I've heard it will probably be the loudest element of my system.

If you are that concerned about noise buy a seagate 7200.7 120gb/160gb/200gb sata drive. They are relatively quiet (my fans were louder than it, and I have very slow fans) and they are fast, though it won't be as fast as a raptor it was fast enough for me. Windows installed in ~16 mins, and everything else was pretty zippy as well. You can get a good 200gig sata one for around $110 oem

IMO a little speed upgrade is not worth it, especially since the majority of the time I am playing games not loading them or starting up windows.

The Raptor isn't loud at all, you will never hear it over your fans in that case!

If you are not planing on storing large amounts of media, get the 74gb Raptor.
You won't be dissapointed at all.
You rig will ROCK!

'Zactly what he said. You're not going to notice a difference unless either : a.) You currenlty have the quietest HDD known to man b.) You stick your ear up to the case and listen. The Raptor is not "louder" enough to even warrant a statement of a noise issue. Of course, in a HTPC... a different story.

did MSI clear up the issues surrounding:MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI

mobo review
We at HardOCP are sorry to report that this MSI K8N Neo4 motherboard has experienced errors in the field with overclockers. There seem to be some bugs that MSI cannot fix that are specific to this board that we never experienced in our testing. That said, we are pulling our award given, and advise you to look elsewhere should you be in the market for an enthusiast motherboard.
