Do you first force AA or use game settings?

How do you setup your AntiAliasing for Games?

Was wondering what everyone else does first when playing games. Feel free to post why.

I normally just use game settings. I only use the NV control panel if the game has issues or I want to specifically assign something like TRSS to a specific game.

Many of the games I play don't seem to work well with control-panel-forced AA. Like in World of Warcraft for example, AA doesn't work at all from the control panel, you HAVE to use the in-game AA settings. Though you are still able to select your AA filter from the control panel.

I always use in game if possible, as the different games I have uses different level of AA depending on its performance
Crysis - 2x AA
Serious Sam HD - 4x AA
Shadow of Chernobyl - 2x AA
Tropico 3 - No AA

Using in game setting prevents me from having to access the control panel and change the level of AA each time I play a game

In my experience forcing through control panel first will cause more problems then skip them, enabling in game options as a first is always the best practice.

does anyone know what the highest settings possible are running counter strike source? as in...what combination of in game settings and control panel settings can be used to get the very best look?

with ATI, I usually set in driver, since its much better IMO.

but for nVidia, I usually set in game. Don't ask me why....

You should always set in game first if they support it , because the developer has the exact knowledge of which surfaces need AA and which surfaces don't, so you don't end up paying more of a performance cost than necessary.

With control panel AA, the way it works is the driver has to guess what surfaces to apply AA to. When it does this, it could:

1. Be completely wrong, and you get no AA (because it's on the wrong surfaces) yet you pay a perf cost because it's still doing AA (in vain).

2. Be partially wrong.. i.e. you get AA, but at a more severe performance cost than necessary. Maybe the game only needs AA applied to 1 surface in the entire rendering pipeline yet the driver applies it to 3... that's inefficient. Since the graphics driver has to guess though, it can never be perfect.

That's why control panel AA is only useful for circumstances where the game doesn't support it, and there's no better alternative anyway.

The one exception to this is if you use enhance AA (on NVIDIA).. basically you set some AA level in game, but maybe the game only offers up to 4x AA, so you set that, as well as 16x AA in the control panel in "enhance" mode. The driver then knows exactly what surfaces to apply AA to because the game is already doing it itself. It then simply substitutes whatever value of AA the game was applying for the value you specified in the control panel. In this case, it is as optimal as in-game AA, and extends the levels of AA offered by the game to higher levels.
