Um... yes, we need updates.

An outdated system is a vulnerable system. They fix numerous bugs, security flaws etc.

It's actually rather simple:

If connected to the internet at anytime, answer is yes.

If no connection exists, it can't hurt.

Unless people are bringing disks in (IE, virus on a disk) something not plugged into the Internet cannot be infected.

However, Windows updates CAN increase the STABILITY of the system as well (not so much a big issue nowadays though).

Just depends what you use it for, really. But as a general rule of thumb- updates are good.

The average user definitely needs updates, as such a user is typically the most vulnerable target. I would advocate selective choice when updating, but the average user probably doesn't comprehend enough to make those choices, so they are best left with automatic updates.
