Do VRM Temps really matter

I have read many comments about VRM temperatures over the past couple years. Do high temps really make any sort of difference? I noticed in the ASUS R9 290x DCII review that the temps were higher. I was hoping to get this card and wondered if I should be concerned?
 
Out of control VRM temps can cause issues, yes. Primarily OC ability is affected, but some cards can be unstable even at stock settings if for some reason VRM temps get out of hand. VRM's generate a ton of heat, and if it's not effectively being dissipated that's simply more heat the board has to deal with also.
 
VRM temps below 100C are completely fine for any card. It's when you get around 120C you should be worried. The temps on the 290(X) cards are completely fine at 80C or so.
 
If you're planning on overclocking, they do matter. As VRMs get hotter, they become less efficient at doing their job (voltage regulation) and you can see dips or spikes in voltage. That's bad for overclock stability and the general health of the card.
