do system memory ram sinks really help?

i have 2 512 sticks of crucial 3200 ddr ram...just plain chips.its cas 3 but running fine at cas 2.5.my question is what kind of performance increase will i see if i install copper ram sinks such as this http://www.svc.com/3mcoddrhesp.html no doubt itll look bad azz and i may get them just for that reason.....but will it improve my system any?and more importantly......could it hurt it????? how difficult r these to install? thanks

they take a minute to put on

open you case and touch your ram, if they are too hot for your liking then put them on

i had one of my golden dragons at 2-3-3-11(stock is 2.5-4-4-8) and they didnt change their temp

just got a pair vantec copper ram heat spreaders from frys for 4 bucks each- open box, but the pads haven't been used- i don't notice any increase in performance, but my ram wasn't hot to begin with, and im running my ram at stock voltages.....they sure look nice though, easy to install and it definitly wouldn't hurt performance

Basically they're cosmetic. I'm sure occasionally they let you get further in memory settings, but I've never personally see that happen.

Erik

Cosmetic is the way to put it. They don't do a whole lot. Ram doesn't run that hot. And it's not like you are going to overclock your ram all that much. If you're smart, you get the next version up of ram just to help with your overclocking.

Like if you have a barton 333fsb chip and PC-2700 Ram, and you want to go to 400fsb, just get PC3200...

So it's almost pointless for them.

in some cases, thats true, but i know that i went from pc3200(400 mhz) with somting lik 2.5-3-3-8 timings to pc 4200( dunno what i should call it! :)) but 510 mhz wiht 2-2-2-11 timings..thats a major overclock IMHO... but onto the Q

the heatsinks that come on ramchips really dont do anything, and some times(quite often) hinders performence, i have seen MANY postings taht when people take off their facory installed heatspreaders teh overclocks increase... but the ones taht you install some times help a little...but they aren't needed as ram doesnt get to hot..my ram when at 255 with 3.25 Vdimm and 2-2-2-11 timings gets WARM but by warm i just mean not cold..its amazing that they arent burning my hand!!

I like the way they look and personally I think it makes the ram physically easier to handle. You don't have to be as gentle touching it. For 4 bucks each they're not a bad deal. If they help a little then why not? If not they look cool and can be had cheaply.

Well.... taking OFF the heatspredder from my 512M HyperX3500 was good for 10Mhz. They had a sticker on ONE ram chip, under the heatspredder. Wouldnt you know Memtest86 was giving me an error on ONE particular BYTE...the one corresponding to the LABEL...wtf. It was getting hotter than the rest and messing up sooner. Chips were CH5 btw....but my 2x 256 stcks act like BH5... 11,2,2,2 245Mhz, and hopefully DONT have labels on under the heatspredder....unreal.

That's the second thread I've seen you post a whole bunch of dead links to pics in. Fix it!

The average person doesn't overclock their Ram all that much. They just get the next version up.

BUT, if you are overclocking your ram A LOT, then heatspreaders and some sort of fan on them would be nice. That's it.

RAMsinks do fuck-all.

the mem doesnt get hot. if you do it, do it for looks, cos its not gonna improve your O/C worth a damn

Yes, well the average person doesn't overclock their CPU either. This is a forum for overclockers, so I think it's pretty safe to assume that MOST people here overclock their RAM.

49 more posts i think.

doesnt matter, anyway. theres people who postwhore the boards that dont know dick. dont be one of those.

dont even make eye contact with them (figuratively)

You will forever be cheeze in my heart. Just for posting all those dead links in so many threads. :)

I wouldn't say Cosmetic.. i would say aesthetics :)... I think peoploe only buy RAm sinks for aesthetic reasons.. it just makes you feel good.. you know?

More shiny things in my PC makes me feel bad, not good. Non-shiny things that are non-functional also make me feel bad. I can't win with RAMsinks...

wow.......thanks for all the replys so quickly :).
i think il just leave them alone.....use the old "if it aint broke............." attitude.
once again thanks folks.

I was even speaking the average person meaning the average overclocker too. A lot of the people here don't overclock their ram, they get smart and get better ram. The top ram is 550mhz and most people don't even get that.

So it's a reasonable assumption that people just get better ram. Rather then overclocking it. That's all I'm saying.

I get what you're saying, but I don't get how it's smart to buy faster RAM yet not to just buy a faster CPU. It's sort of anti-overclocking atittude. I do know that you usually don't get amazing overclocks from RAM. But still most of us are not going to say "well, I can crank up my FSB a little more... but I'd rather leave my PC3200 at 200MHz rather than the 205 I could be running at." I know I would overclock the RAM, not buy a new stick so I could get 5 more MHz on the FSB.

memory ram sinks dont help in my opinion.

i've seen many instances where ram would overclock higher without the heatspreaders.
