Do PCIe x8 Video Cards Exist??

I am trying to put video in an AMD Opteron server rig that has PCIe x8 and PCI-X slots. I could earily put a standard PCI card in the PCI-X slots, but I need those slots for other things so I'm trying to get the video into a PCIe slot if I can.

Does anyone know of a x8 PCIe video card? If so, anyone have linkage?

I've done some Googling and not come up with any video that fits the bill.
 
Sometimes PCIe X8 slots will allow X16 cards by not having the end closed or being a full X16 length. If your slot is not that I have see PCIe x1 graphics cards that will be fine for a server. Heck I just installed a PCI graphics card in a server today after a motherboard swap..
 
My understanding is that a regular PCI-e x16 card will run at x1, x4, or x8 if you put it in a lower link rate slot.

There are a few PCI-e x1 video cards which will work in any PCI-e slot.

I am pretty sure that you can use an x4 or x8 slot provided you either have a slot that doesn't have the end closed off or if you open up the end of the slot if it is closed off.

I don't believe there's such a thing as a PCI-E x8 videocard.

We jumped from AGP 8x to PCI-E 16x
 
Exactly as others have stated - the slots my very well be 8x electrically, but what are the mechanically?

Take a look at the slot, how long is it? Is it open ended?
 
A PCI-E 16x card should work on a 8x slot, AFAIK with slightly less performance.
 
Yea.. it should just backdown the proformace down to 8x.. Ive never seen a 8x Pci-e.. But like most has said on here, it still will work.. Kinda like when you take (2) 16x pci-e slot that supports 8x8x SLI.. works the same :)
 
In theory you could also cut the card tab itself down to x8 length and put it in the x8 slot. Not sure if I'd be willing to try it myself, but I've heard it does work.

It does work. You can either cut the card itself, or you can cut the end of the mobo slot. The card will take a hit from reduced bandwidth, but it will be a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a 1x card.

Cripes, this goes either way. With a more expensive video card, I'd cringe to cut the card. But with an expensive server board I'd hate to screw up the board by messing up that slot cut :eek:
 
I think I'm going to try to get my hands on a x1 PCIe card. Anyone have one for sale?
 
Server boards are almost always 8x electrically but 16x physically. A 16x card will work just fine and cost a bit less than a 1x card.
 
You can get a 8x riser, which is cheap, and cut it's notch so that both your vid card and serverboard are intact.

The OP board's PCI-E 8x slot is not open-ended, it has a notch at the end of the slot. The choices are limited to either cutting that notch or cutting the card's edge connector (pcb) and he doesn't want to alter the board since it's a serverboard :), cutting the pcb is also not a wise decision. IMO, getting a riser and do what you want to it coz it's cheap :D
 
I've never seen one, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.
