So I was thinking of going 4K with a new build but was wondering when I boot up older games like Doom 3, Fallout 3, and stuff from 15 years ago whats going to happen. Will a 2160 resolution suddenly be available in the options in the settings section ? or will I need to edit some file in the games install folder ? Will this be a hassle ? Other then the cost in involved what are some cons that I may not be aware of ? Thanks

some old games don't even have higher than 1600x1200 in the settings and don't have 16:9 options.
you are going to have to try them and see, or read up on the older games running on newer hardware.

The older the game, the less likely. WSGF is your friend in figuring out how to deal with the games that don't handle 4K and/or 16:9 well or at all (see the Games DB section).

Doom 3 (the 2004 version) just needs an .ini hack to support widescreen properly (WSGF entry for Doom 3 2004)
Doom 3 BFG Edition (the 2012 version) supports widescreen natively.
Fallout 3 needs an .ini hack but you're probably going to do that anyway along with the two hundred mods you apply to it.

For many smaller games that don't even make the WSGF list, just finding the .ini and looking for variations of X=1920 Y=1200 or Width=1600 Height=1200 or similar permutations and changing them to the resolution you want may (or may not) be all you need to do.

You can also enable DSR 4.0x factor, and go into each game option and see if 4k option pops up, that'll give you an idea what games natively has 4k resolution built in.
