Do new computer automatically recognize SATA drives?

Or do you need special drivers on a floppy? My bro has a Maxtor diamondback 10 80 gig HD and is installing it to a NF4 mobo.
 
On nForce4, it depends. If he is not running RAID and is using the generic ATA drivers built into Windows XP w/ SP2, then Windows will pick it up with no problem. He can even do a fresh install of Windows on to his new SATA drive without a driver floppy. However, if he is running NV RAID he will need to provide a driver, either by F6 disk or slipstreaming, to access the drive.
