Do mobo temps matter?

My computer's been locking up on me and the only thing I can think of it being is the temp of the mobo or my PSU.

MBM5 is saying at load my cpu temp is 32c and my case temp is 40c. I have a xp-120 with an undervolted panaflo fan on it.

So I always hear about keeping CPU temps down but what should the other temp be at? Also, am I correct in assuming this is the temp of the northbridge?

your temps arent that bad
its more than likely somethin else, just for the heck of it take the door off your tower and see if it runs fine

The side of my case is off. My case has no ventilation so I keep the side off. What I can't figure out is why it would be happening now. I haven't changed anything and the PSU seems fine. Only thing I could think of was that high mobo temperature.

touch the northbridge and make sure it's not overheating(i.e. burning your finger) If it has a fan on it then you're golden, if not then check the caps on the mobo with a flashlight and make sure they aren't bloated or broken, check the standoff distance between back of mobo and case yadd yadda. If all that checks out, might be time to grab another PSU.

take a home fan and place it on the side. see if things change.

Yes, use a big desk / house fan & blow lots of air in to the case.

Well it isn't doing it anymore anyway. go figure.

This mobo doesn't have a fan on the north bridge, just a pretty heatsink.

Just for giggles, what psu do you have? If it has the words "deere" on it anywhere on it, trash it immediately and consider yourself lucky. If you need any suggestions on psu's, davidhammock is the resident expert on power supplies and won't steer you wrong.

It sounds to me like the MBM5 sensors are configured incorrectly.

Try this:
- Let the board idle for 5 minutes, and note the MBM5 temps.
- Reboot and enter BIOS immediately.
- Note the CPU and board temps reported by your BIOS.
- Temps reported by MBM5 and BIOS shouldn't disagree by more than 2C.

It is very unlikely that board temp is higher than CPU temp under any circumstance.

Also, if you can only run stably with case-door open, you need a case with decent ventilation.

It's a "Safe Power". seems safe to me.

I did the restart and check bios thing and the mobo temp was spot on with MBM5. they both said 43c. I guess i'm unique.

Davidhammock already helped with with his list of good PSUs. props to him!

what kinda lockups you getting? any bsod?
and what are you doing at the time?
check your event viewer adn see if you get any errors in there....man i love event viewer

Well after the 2 times it hasn't happened again. no BSOD, just no display. My monitors went into power save mode and the computer wouldn't respond to anything.

I checked Event Manager and the only thing that happened was "TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts."

I don't think it's possible for your CPU (at load even!) to be lower than the ambient case temp. Maybe MBM5 is reporting them wrong, or the labels need to be switched.

Well it just happened again. twice. Both while tring to type the same thing in an email in outlook. So i'm thinking possibly ram. Does this diagnosis make sense? Can someone suggest a good program to test my ram? I've heard good and bad things abuot these programs.

Memtest would be the way to check memory. Get the bootable CD iso and leave it running for a few hours (overnight if possible.)

If the error happens when working in outlook, it could possibly be a corrupt .pst file, or more likely a virusscanner/firewall problem.
