Do memory dividers hurt overclocking??

Will you not be able to overclock as well if you use memory dividers? Now the point of using a memory divider is so you can increase your cpu speed without your crappy memory bottlenecking your progress, but i have been seeing a lot of reviews on the internet talking acting like using a memory divider is so horrible. Is this a problem for cpus, or more specifically the new amds. I heard the XPs had some issues with asynchronous memory, but are the 64s and the X2s ok now? :confused: mainly these reviews have been for high end memory saying now you overclock with 1:1, supposedly making the process simpler and better. Do you lose cpu cycles or system speed by using a memory divider or as long the end result (cpu speed) is the same it doesn't matter? Are there any issues with using memory dividers over 1:1???

With an Athlon64 using a ram divider can help you a lot if your ram can't go as high as your cpu. It barely hurts your system.

acutulaly no there was a very recent article done on the athlon 64 and mem dividers and it proved that there is little to no performance difference using dividers or not. it IS KNOWN however, that going 1:1 does help you acheive a better OC provided you have yu kno, top quality ram. but yea, ocing your cpu bu keeping your ram around stock actually does no harm and it may actually be better for your system if when yu use a divider on your ram yu actually have the ram running tighter timings.

back inthe day, the xp's and pentiums etc all were bandwith starved. not so for the athlon 64's

el rolio by a better oc I am assuming you mean a higher cpu speed. That is a little strange because isn't the point of the divider to switch the bottleneck to something else? you would think you would get the same end cpu speed if not greater with the divider seeing as the speed of the memory wouldn't matter then. Well this is good stuff to know for me being an OC beginner thanks.

No...
1T does not help your chances with a high oc, 2T does.

where do you see 1T/2T in that post? i don't :p

definitly read up on my sig about a64's + memory.. it's good info

how do you apply a memory divider?
I've read the same thing about memory divider hurting performance and wanted to test it, but don't know how to make a divider.

hahah thank you mr eclipse sir, i was like "huh???"

oh and my opinion on 2T is N-E-V-A-R

++++++

how do you apply it, well best bet is to go into your bios of course and to the DRAM config or whatever is similaar then look for where yu set cas latencies, trp etc etc. you should see a setting like "dram frequency" then the choices will be 200 / 166 / 133 / 100 or some such. 200 is 1:1, 166 is the next divider down (when htt @ 240, mem @ 200), etc and so on.

i think some boards actually do give you a ratio to choose from so that would be awesome.

oh and check out eclipse's thread, it really does explain it all.

+++++

oh and in reply to what yu said, yes my wording was unclear, i meant to say a better OC on the CPU, becuz the mem might have been holding you back if yu tried to scale the HTT upwards but couldnt cuz of shittywok memory. so i wouldnt necessarily say you get teh same oc if yu use the divider cuz i mean with these here A64 chips, you can scale pretty damn high.

heh on the other handd i guess yu can call it a better oc in a way cuz as far as i know (damn i cant explain this without an arbitrary example) runnin say 250x10 on the cpu with the 166 divider making your mem run at ~208 but with uber tight timings produces a far better performance result than trying to keep the mem 1:1 with the htt and gettin limited at 210x10 on the cpu and 210 with tight or even semi tight timings. why? cuz remember that the mem controller is on die so the higher the actual CPU speed the better results yu get form your mem, given that the mem stays at about the same speed. plus hey, 2.1 GHZ will get owned by 2.5GHZ, know what im saying? and since thats pretty much guaranteed with all the newer a64 cpus, why not?

i hope i didnt jsut talk a lotta BS out me arse but i think i made a clear enough point with some decent reasoning behind it.

This is totally not true. Almost ALL A64's can run at higher CPU speeds when the memory isn't overclocked heavily, because when the chip reaches high speeds the memory controller's ability diminishes.

Most people try to run 1:1 if their memory rocks because there is no need to use a divider if your Mem can reach 300mhz because at thoose speeds one must use a CPU multi that is less than their stock CPU multiplier. I mean try running a 3800+ with it's 12x multi and 300fsb, it ain't gunna happen.

I see it in the post that I quoted....are you not reading the entire thread?

J-Mag...nice to see some people know what's up ;)

ok yet again my shorthand writing has got me in trouble.

jmag i agree with you but what i meant to say even tho i did not separate paragraphs and all that is your memory overclocks better if its runnin in sync, good memory that is. and i wantd to make that as an addition, an anecdote, not like necesarily addressing the original question asked like i said earlier. gosh i need to learn how to express my thoughts heh, cuz what did i go to college for right?

Many 3000+s will do 300htt with full cpu multi.
