Do LCD monitors lose their brightness?

Just wondering before I spend ~$400 on an LCD. I realize that Plasma TV's lose brightness over time, but does this also affect LCD monitors?

They shouldn't, unless the backlight is susceptible to this. None of the types of backlights currently in use will dim over time, AFAIK.

I think I read somewhere that they do, but it takes a very long time. Active matrix lcd's do have a half life of sort, but it's something like 50000 hours. This is very dim in my memory so I could be completly wrong

I've had my LCD since Nov. 2003 and it can still be as headache-inducing bright as it was when I first got it.

Everything fades and die out at some point, the question is how long it takes? As far as I know, the back lights on these LCD's should last you a good 5-10 years at least.

I think pvtgoose is right. 50.000 hours is the number I've seen as well, and, frankly, it's kind of nice to have an excuse to buy new hardware once in a while (a better than "I want it" which my girlfriend isn't very impressed by any more!) ;)

hows the backlight setup? what kinda light is it anyway? something similar to an led, though not circular, and stuffms?

20,000 hours for LCD.
30,000 hours for Plasma.

After this time, the display will look like horse shit. The colors will become faded, and the brightness will not be there. Find a big company that's been running them non-stop for a while, and you will see what it looks like. We have hundreds.

Running 24/7 for three solid years give you 20,000 hours.

DLP's don't suffer from this, and CRT's last so long you wish they would just die.

Matt.

Well when they burn out, it would prob be obsolete anyways :) ..When my new Plasma HDTV goes out, I know there will be better things out there :D

I think larger crts wear out much faster than smaller ones. My 21" sony turned into a faded piece of crap after only a few years. Yet my really old 15" and 17" sony's which have been passed on to relatives are still going strong.

The real problem might be that many of Sony's products have 'faded' into 'pieces of crap' over the years :p

The backlight on LCD's is a fluorescent light. In most cases they can be replaced.

Newer gen flat panels (both LCD and plasma) will last longer than the above mentioned numbers - but in any event either should last so long that it will either have some sort of other failure or will be horribly outdated by the time you need to worry about dimming.
