I've got a Gateway laptop that is nearly three years old with a display that seems to be not as bright as the day I received it. The reason I say "that seems" is because I'm not 100% sure if the backlight is actually becoming weaker over time or if my eyes are playing tricks on me. Also, I've noticed within the first minute of resuming or booting up the laptop the screen will be extremely dim at start but then slowly increase in brightness (kinda like one of those "instant on" CFLs). I'm not sure if that's normal on a typical, fluorescent backlit display; it's a phenomena I've never really noticed on any other LCD.
edit: Sorry, I wanted to mention that I've already googled this question only to come up with results about built-in dimming functions in laptops and broken LCDs.
