Do IDE to SATA Convertors work?

I'm looking to remove some of these ide cables from my system. Namely 2 hard drives and an optical drive. Do these ide to sata convertors actually work, and if so is there a consensus on the best brand?
I use WD hard drives, should that make any difference in compatibility.

They all work just fine, but they can be a pain because now your dealing with larger adapters and possibly having to power each adapter adding to your cable mess. Just get nice rounded IDE's.
 
I bought a couple of these when SATA was first available (don't remember the brand). They are kinda bulky, and I would definitely not recommend using them in a RAID format.

Also be careful when ordering them. Some of them actually plug into the HD itself, and some onto the mainboard.

IMO you should just get a couple smaller rounded IDE cables, much safer route.
 
Well, I was thinking about these for a different reason. I have an Asus P5WD2-E board (975x based) and I've got 4 IDE drives in the system. 1 200gb HD, 1 DVD-Rom, 1 DVD-RW, and 1 CD-RW for work (I want to keep my Yamaha CRW-F1, before you tell me to just use my DVD-RW to burn audio CDs... lol).

Anyway, to make a long story as short as I can, the Intel ICH7-based board only has 1 IDE port to work with, but Asus has included a secondary Marvell SATA/ATA controller that has 4 extra SATA ports and 1 IDE port. I have 4 SATA drives plugged into the Intel SATA controller (filling it up) and nothing plugged into the Marvell SATA. The shit part of the whole deal is that the drivers seem to be "broken" for this thing (widespread problem) and only recently have they (apparently) fixed the SATA drivers via a BIOS update/driver update combo. However... the IDE portion of the drivers still appear to be broken, but I need my burners to work :(

How well would these converters work if I got 2 of them and plugged them into the back of my burners, and plugged them into the SATA ports instead of the IDE?
 
The 200GB HDD should work fine with an adapter. However, SATA optical/ATAPI support, especially on RAID controllers, is sketchy at best. I'd look at the Marvell documentation and/or contact their support and see if it supports optical/ATAPI drives.
 
The manual says that their IDE ports support ATAPI (go figure... drivers broke = port no workie), but their support always redirects me to contact Asus. And lazy-ass Asus just wants me to RMA the board :rolleyes: It's not the board that's broken, this is a widespread issue and needs to be fixed at the driver/bios level. That said, the Plextor SATA burners are just IDE drives with these SATA bridges, right? And they seem to work just fine... I wouldn't trust my 200gb IDE drive on the Marvell controller (the original driver that came with the board caused some data corruption or delayed write fails and stuff) even with the new drivers... that's why I have the opticals plugged into the thing. But burning at anything other than a low speed doesn't seem to work. Most of these bridge chips support ATAPI as well, from what I can see on Ebay.
