Do I really need X-Fi?

Hey, I game alot but only have 2.1 speakers and only use my KOSS headphones at night. So would the EAX 5.0 of the prelude actually benefit me? Also, I am not that crazy about sound, sound is sound as long as I can hear them shootin me I'm fine. I also watch movies and listen to some music (though I mostly rely on my mp3). So what soundcard would you recommend? Or will I be fine with onboard of a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L?
 
Honestly If your not a Audio "nut" I.E want to hear every single rain drop hitting the ground. Or dont want to spend any extra cash, onboard would be fine.

But if you got the cash, and want a little more clarity to sounds, and maybe like 1% performance increase go for a sound card. Havent had any experience with the Xfi series but have an sound blaster ZS series in my rig now, and love it.
 
Yea I only need the basic sounds, ambient, gunfire, spell casting(lawl), talking... I do have the cash but if i can save the $200 I will get a 24" BenQ
 
IMO Gaming sound effects aren't that great of quality. What really matters in games is surround sound, so you can pinpoint your enemy by ear. As you maybe look towards Vista, the X-Fi and surround sound may not be that great of a solution. Creative hasn't been a poster child for great driver support. And the changes that Vista brought haven't been easily or seamlessly worked out for these cards.

If the MP3's you listen to aren't like 320Kbps or higher, then you probably won't hear an improvement in sound quality with a dedicated card. With my FLAC rips, my Audigy 2 stomps my on board audio for stereo playback quality. Dynamic range and stereo imaging, all much better on the Audigy.

In the interim, i might just buy a super cheap Audigy 2 ZS to hold over until some more vista 5.1 solutions come out for the long term.
