Im a gamer but i just want to game at 1280 x 1024 with with AA and AF, the reason i am not interested in 1600 x 1200 is because my eyes are pretty bad and small text give me a headache(unless the game give option to increase it), so should i get a powerful single card? or SLI or crossfire?

a single powerful gpu will be fine. I think you only really need crossfire or sli is if you're gaming above 1600x1200... or have a HUGE (more than 24'') monitor.

Sounds like the 7900GT would be just right for you. Plays games great at 1280x1024 with AA and AF, starts to struggle a bit at 1600x1200

If you wanna go for Single GPU and want best performance then GEFORCE 7950 GX2 1GB or Geforce 7900 GT is what you need. You can pick the card from BFG / XFX / EVGA they are all excellent manufacturers . You cant go wrong with GEFORCE 7950 GX2( Overpowered) if you want your games to run with MAX Detail and 8xAA /16xAF . But if you play your games at 1280*1024 go with Geforce 7900 GT.

You will be able to place all of your games at 1280*1024 at max Detail .

Lol, no. If you needed it for 1280*1024 what would you need for 1920*1200.

Haha... exactly that's fucking ridiculous. 7900GT 256mb version will work JUST fine... no need to go more expensive than that if all you want is 1280x1024 at full/close to full AA/AF. I have one and can speak from experience.

^^^ what he said. 7900gt handles everything fine at 1280x1024.

Dude you need better classes :D

So am I the only guy left that prefers 1024x768 res for my games? Hell sometimes I knock it down to 800x600 for games like Oblivion that are resource hogs.

PS monitor is a 19' LCD.

I think the x1900xt 256mb is a better choice since its faster than the 7900gt and is in the same price range

Yes. Can't believe you're not running native on your LCD either, that's just crazy :)

There are tons of people at my work that do that. I can't stand it. My eyes aren't the greatest, but even I can see fine on a 20.1" LCD that has a native 1600x1200 resolution.

Additionally, a friend of mine picked up both of my old 7800GTX 256MB cards when I upgraded to twin 7900GTX's. He games at 1280x1024 because that is all his monitor can do. (Viewsonic VX924). Though he doesn't need the power of SLi for 1280x1024, he at least has the headroom to do full AA and AF, and turn on all the eye candy in nearly any game out there right now. So don't think of SLi as only being an option for excessive resolutions, you can also go higher with the eye candy at lower resolutions.

I game at that resolution but that is just because that is all my system will handle at present. Once i get upgraded im going to get away from it damn soon.....

@OP: First you should ask yourself how often you are willing to upgrade and what your intrest is in future games.

If you know that you are not going to upgrade for a while, but want to play modern next-gen titltes then I would buy something that has more wiggle room. If you upgrade frequently, then just buy what you need now.

Nope, I play at 1024. :)

I'm all about the 1024x768 (in games; I use 1280x1024 for my desktop). I just find it's less stretched vertically than 1280x1024.

what is the real benefit of having a monitor that big? other than the fact that it can fit alot of windows in the screen and it challenges the size of most high definition televisions?

Okay... I game at 1280x1024, 17" LCD, so that is native
BFG 7800GT 256mb
A64 4000+ @ 2.6Ghz
2 GB o' RAM

Everything runs just about maxed out (what ever I can set In-Game) on everything I play:
BF2 (and mods), UT2004 (old I know), Source, Oblivion... Then again, I'm old and easily pleased ;)
A friend of mine has an x1900XTX.. schweet card - runs his LCD monitor native (1280) at higher settings (he tweaks the AA and AF) with a similar system. So one does not need to spend a crapload of $ on a video card that will run everything all shiney.

And running an LCD at less than native? Ewwwwwww....... Makes my brain hurt.

Peace,
Tim

My eyes are pretty bad too, so I'm with you with the small text issue.
As for the card you should get, I don't think you need SLI or Crossfire. I own a 7800 GTX 256 MB, and it handles all current games pretty smoothly @ 1280x1024 (even Oblivion). The equivalent current NVIDIA card is the 7900 GT, but as someone already suggested, you should go with a X1900 XT. Same price and a bit better performance. Can't go wrong with it and it will handle games very well at that resolution.

I just built my new rig and it has 2 x 7950GT's SLI'd. Honestly I can't tell if I need that much power right now since my monitor only does 1680x1050, but from what I've seen in all the games I have, setting them to max eye candy w/ anti-aliasing, my cards seem to handle themselves pretty well. It's hard for me to do a comparison to my old computer because that was running on a 9800 pro.

I'm think I'm set for the few upcoming games I really want to play like BF2142, ET Quake Wars and Spore all at 1680x1050 max settings. I would have gone with a 7950GX2 if I needed a single slot solution.

I'm running a 1900XTX and I game @ 12x10 and I have yet to throw somthing at the system that it couldn't handle. I max out EVERY setting and it is smooth as butter. Go with a single top end card... you won't regret it.
