Do I really need an 800W?

Which PSU is the better choice?

Wow, its been ages since I've been around here.:D

I have returned to ask the [H]ard community their opinion on which PSU I should choose.

Way back when I bought an ABS desktop after the XPS 700 fiasco. After an RMA for a dead mobo, UPS trashed it and it ended up being rebuilt by ABS. Of course they voided the warranty and so when the mobo died again I replaced it with a board I found locally.

Well three years after buying a PC from ABS... the PSU has died.

So now I am looking around for a new PSU and have found myself with two options.

I was running an 800W but don't think I need an 800W for what I've got.

GA-N650SLI-DS4 Mobo
8800 GTS 640 MB Card
Core 2 E6600 2.4G 775 CPU
Corsair Twin2X1024-5400C4 RAM
Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS 320GB HD
Sony 16X DDU1615/B2 DVD
Samsung SH-S162L DVD

Got a line on a XON-800P14N for $60+ but can find a CMPSU-750TX locally for around $80+ with a five year warranty.

Which would be the better choice?

You don't even need a 600W PSU. Not even close. 450W and above would be enough to run what you have now.

Even if you did need 800W...I wouldn't go for the Xion 800W...looks like a non-APFC Superflower.

Something like the VX550 is all you need and for $80 and $60 after rebate, that is a good deal.

If you would rather have the TX750 for $80...then go for that.

As was mentioned, a quality 500W unit is more than enough for your setup. Consider the BFG LS-550 or the Corsair 550VX or 650TX.

If you don't plan on upgrading, a 550W would be just fine. If you do, a 750W would be fairly future-proof.

This.

Thank you

Did some digging and it turns out that ABS originally threw in a 550W PSU. Not sure why they replaced it with an 800W during the post UPS crushathon rebuild.

Looks like the 550VX is my best option. The GS-550 looked like a great deal too but its out of stock.:(

The VX550 is a better PSU than the GS-550 anyway. It's a good choice.

Fry's has the LS-550 for $40 at stores only.

VX550 is still better, but for $40 the LS-550 is certainly no slouch
