Do I need the SMP client?

I have been reading that with a multicore setup, you need to use the SMP client. I am a bit confused, because in task manager both my cores of my 6000+ are being utilized. What exactly is the SMP client, and would it make me a better producer?

PS. Yeah, Im new lol.
 
You don't need to use the SMP client; you could use an instance of the uniprocessor client on each core. However, SMP generally gives better PPD and runs faster. People generally prefer to use it because it's more efficient.

You also mentioned that both cores of your CPU are being used, but I can't explain that unless you tell me specifically how you have things set up right now. Depending on which clients you're using and how they're configured, there are a whole bunch of possibilities that could cause 100% usage on both cores.
 
Ok, I think I am going to try the SMP client after I am done with this next unit.
 
SMP is definitely more efficient and convenient. You would need to run one console client for each core on your box where you could run 1 (or 2 if C2Q) SMP clients.

 
Actually, I have decided to install 2 instances of the normal client. Before, my usage on both cores in Task Manager was about 60-70 percent, but now it is flat 100% usage.
 
I still recommend you go with the SMP client; you'll get much more efficient use out of your CPU.
 
The console client besides being slower, is worth WAYYY less points than the SMP client. The average block in console is worth 200 points or less and takes about 1-2 days to finish. 1 SMP block takes about 2-3 days to complete, but is worth at LEAST 1720 points, usually 1920 points. I would seriously recommend you run the SMP client.
 
I got it fixed

I have configured SMP as per the instructions for the Deino guide on this forum. When running this for the first time, i get this error.

Edit:I think I see the problem, it says I need a password on my machine, and there is not currently one. Is there no way around this?

Second Edit: I made an actual password for my windows account and reran the bat and all is good now. Thanks for being so friendly and tolerant of my newbness!
 
the SMP client is a bitch to set up on XP/VISTA


linux and OSX are easy as hell though.


But yes, it is worth it, just hard to borg with when there's so many things to go wrong in the setup process.
