Do I need a UPS? With AVR?

Just wondering how bad it is to run your computer without a UPS. I don't really care about working during a power outtage. But after doing some research it seems people talk alot about AVR and having stable power to the computer. Is this really necessary?

What do you guys think?
 
You could always just buy an AVR (not a UPS, but just an AVR)

Hi JonnyGURU, do you personally use a UPS or an AVR? I'm just trying to get an idea if these devices are something that would be considered a "must purchase", or if people that use these are just being extra cautious.

Personally, I've had brownouts happen before and my computer just shutdown. But i've never really noticed any permanent effects to my hardware. Also, I havn't even had corrupted data or anything. So from my vantage point, it seems UPS is only useful if your working on a document that hasn't been saved and you brownout, or if you want to work during downtimes. And AVR doesn't seem to have "tangible" benefits.

Should I get something, or am I just totally fine plugging into the wall through a surge protected power bar?
 
Depends!

If I have something that I just want to make sure gets a constant voltage, I use an AVR.

For example, PSU's that I have hooked up to the load tester is on an AVR.

Stuff that I want to keep running even during a power outage, I have on a UPS.

For example, my PC's are all on UPS's.
 
I'm now shopping for a UPS. I don't have much budget, so i found what looks like a decent Belkin one on ebay. My question is about the power rating on the UPS's, it's rated 550va, 330watts. This sounds fine to me for when it's running on battery during a blackout. But what about when the UPS is not using battery, is it still limited to this rating? I have a Seasonic 500w powersupply, so i'm just wondering if i ever do draw more than 330watts during regular use (say at startup or something, or if i upgrade to sli-maybe..) will this UPS start beeping or is the rating only a factor when it's running on battery?
