Do I need a static IP?

I am planning on setting up a home network. I have a desktop, laptop, and a printer. The thing I want to know before I do anything is if I need a static IP to set up the network and for it to be stable. I have worked in an office and we had a problem wherein the network would fail after a few minutes and the server would need to be restarted for the connection to work again. A networking guy came in and said the problem was due to the office having a dyamic IP. Afterwards we called our ISP and got a static IP from them and all was well from then on. The ISPs generally charge extra for a static IP and I don't want to pay if I don't have to, so I just want to know if the above scenario was due to the office setting or if it could affect a home network also. I have a cable internet connection with Road Runner. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.
 
A internet static IP would only affect you if you were running a web server of some description. If you wanted just a basic home network to share files, printers and the internet then no you would not need one. Even if you were running a web server you could get away with not having one.

Seriously, you need to get your money back from this clown. Find someone else who's not just throwing gibberish to compensate for his lack of knowledge. The only thing that may be a factor in this is not setting all this up right in the first place -- but this networking guy should've been able to recommend a solution? What the F does dynamic IP have anything to do with the server connectivity on a local LAN? Geesh. Maybe the server's running dynamic IP -- getting from router? -- Again, this clown should've fixed it.

Off the top of my head, it could be that the entire office works off of a remote desktop server. Their ISP could forcefully recycle IPs ( AOL used to do this ). Were this to happen in the middle of the day, it would cause issues such as this. So getting a static IP would make perfect sense in this situation ( although getting a new ISP would make better sense ).

Agreed, but sharing printers and such? And yes I did think that I'm not really seeing the big picture. Just sometimes there's people who take advantages of others...

If the are utilizing a print queue stationed on the other side of a wan link, then yes; That could happen. Further, we have no idea what upper management wanted, which changes the landscape considerably. There have been many times that I've had to implement a less than ideal solution simply because a PHB read something in a trade magazine rife with buzzwords.

As I said, we just don't have enough informatoin.
 
"network would fail after a few minutes"...ugh..makes me picture that they plugged a switch into the modem..and every computer got a dynamic public IP address..multiple IP account from the ISP. Yuck!

do you have a network based printer? or is it connected to one of the computers? if you did have a network printer i would say that you should set the IP for that, so you can install it based on ip address.. but otherwise no, just get a router and plug your computers into it and you will be fine..
 
Chances are he has just got some inkjet printer, if not then he would be reccomended to set a static IP to it.

Also, I think you may be getting confused between an internal static IP and an external one. As noted, there's very few reasons for a home user to have an external static IP. However, internally on your router settings port forwarding, file sharing, gaming and things of that nature could benefit from a static IP. This is easy to set up on a router.

If I misread and you know the difference, I apologize. However, I remember that the two used to confuse me quite a bit.

I can't live without internal static IP's, nothing like restarting two computers and the DCHP server assigning a new IP adress. ARRRGGGGHHHH

What DHCP server were you using? Default bahvior for most sane servers is to hand out new addresses to new mac addresses instead of immediately recycling an old address.

Belkin Pre-N Router and it's really slow at handing adresses out (not that I could care less).

Ah fun. Remind me never to buy belkin. In this day and age, screwing up a basic service such as dhcp is a systemic problem, and indicates a severe lack of quality control.

I have to agree with you w/ Belkin products. I stay away from Belkin as much as I can.
