 I recently moved to the United States from the U.K. and brought my computer with me, after plugging it in and trying to use it here in the States it turns on but clearly isn't getting enough power because the fans make a lot less noise, i think this is because of the different voltages. The U.S. voltage is 110, whereas the U.K. is 240.

My computer wouldn't actually load and nothing appeared on the screen although it didn't shut down until i did it manually. Does anyone know whether simply getting a new power supply would fix this and if the data on my HDD will still be there???

Hmm... usually active PFC PSUs (required in the UK) also auto-switch.

Not always, but when they're 240V only, it's clearly marked on the back of the unit.

What kind of PSU is it?

i definately dont think theres a switch because i bought it from a company similar to dell (they use the cheapest components possible)

Well... if it's a known cheap unit, just chuck it and welcome to the United States. Where high amperage, low voltage reigns and clean mains be damned!!!

i aint got the money for a whole new comp. it's average but it plays most thing fine.
i got a whole lot of stuff stored on it too. so if anyone knows if a new psu would solve this, let me know :)

Dude. Your hard drive doesn't run on 240VAC. It's going to be fine. The data is still there. A PC is going to post with or without a hard drive! You're not even getting POST so thinking about the data on your hard drive should be far from your thoughts. Put a 110V power supply in there and call it a day.

thanks for helpin him jonnyGURU, i lent him my account as i am a good friend of his, and seen as he does not have the net as his pc up yet, using the library pc's to create an account takes an age :p , the first thing i said would be the voltage on the psu, but i suggested asking the 'guru' on here for some advice :D
