Hi guys, I am currently using a 7200rpm 2mb buffer and a 5400 1mb hard drive. Do you think I should upgrade? Boot and load times are fairly slow. Storage is no concern because I am not even using 1/2 of my current 30gbs.

I have a 2.8ghz A64 DTR / DFI LP UT / and 1gb Crucial ram coming in. I am kind of strapped for cash after that, so I put hard drives on the back burner.

What does a decent hard drive cost now a days. I'd like to replace my 5400rpm as soon as possible. Possibly even run Raid 0.

Does anybody here have a spare HD they could sell me pretty cheap.
 
Generally, 160GB SATA drives should be under $90, and 250GB drives should be less than $125. You will come close to doubling performance if you go with one of the category leaders in the Buyer's Guide.
 
Unfortuately, it's almst impossible to drive the cost of a hard drive below $50. Every hard drive has an actuator, control board, spindle motor and at least one platter. That's the majority of the cost right there. This is why a 20GB drive is within $10 of an 80GB. You may as well spend the little extra, as the 80GB drive's much higher density and newer design will get you a nice performance boost. This also explains why there is little difference in price between a 40GB drive and an 80GB drive. They are of the same geometry, but the 40GB drive only uses one side of the platter while the 80GB drive uses both. Once again, the cost to make the 40 and 80 drive is virtually the same, but the 80GB drive delivers twice the capacity at essentially the same cost. Sorry, but economics and manufacturing reality are working against you here.
 
$50 is too much for me with all of these new upgrades coming in. I still want to consider sound card and a new video card. I guess my best bet would be used. I've only had 1HD fail on me. It was 6 years old.
