I gots a abit IS7 with a 2.8C

do i need to upgrade my stuff if i want to get an 8x AGP 6800gt card?
obviously i dont HAVE to, but should I.
better cost/benefit ratio!

get some kind of 64bit AMD processor. AMD Athlon 64 or FX series. Intel can't cut it right now.
 
depends on what you do. what do you do?

the 2.8C is a good chip. overclock it a bit, say shoot for 3.2 or 3.4 and throw a 6800GT in it. itll be a nice, cost effective upgrade. of course, if you just want something to play wtih had give you better performance in games, get an a64. if you are heavy into multimedia and video editing and multitasking while doing so, stick wtih the p4.
 
The 2.8 should still be able to feed the 6800GT reasonably well, some future games may leave you CPU bound so you might want to start saving some pennys. Also note that socket 478 is off Intel's radar and when they no longer have older chipsets to fill orders and mobo makers have cleared out old stock it will be tougher to get S478 CPUs, find out what you mobo can support and start watching for price changes, assuming your board can take Prescott cores?

Intel is still "cutting it" just fine, yes the A64s are faster but if you compare an A64 3000+ to a PIV 3.0 I would hardly call what the PIV puts out as not "cutting it".
 
yeah, the IS7 can support prescotts. 478 prescotts run hot as hell though, so i would highly suggest a northwood if you want to take the upgrade of the 478 route.

I have a 2.6C overclocked to 3.2 and I feel no pressing need to upgrade. It plays CS:S great, encodes video in a reasonable amount of time, and is generally very stable. The HyperThreading makes for silky-smooth desktop performance, too, even if a mid-range A64 could beat it out in games.

This is all with a 9800 Pro by the way.

heh yeah, i had the same question too. I was just making sure it could feed it well. Looking for a cost effective upgrade, but dont plan to overclock. Im not sure what core I have, and cast test cuz its all in parts now.

i eventually plan on getting a Venice 3200, srry intel, but it wont be till this summer when i get more money
 
you have a northwood.

overclocking could save you a couple hundered bucks opposed to getting a new chip, but to each his own.

quick question: are you using stock cooling or something else? and if so, what?
 
Echo, to answer your first question, yes the IS7 and 2.8 will run with a 6800gt. You may need a bigger psu if anything.

Oc that sucker for the extra speed at no cost.

If you buy a new set up, buy a dual core Amd or Intel, it doesn't make sense not to, but with that logic why spend the money on an AGP 6800 gt. Aren't skt 939 all pci-e?

no. all NF3 boards are AGP.
 
not trying to steal your thread but i have a 3.2e @ 4.2ghz would a amd64 3200+ be a good upgrade i can o/c alot more but summers here and i dont have the winter cooling had it to 4.7ghz stable 4.9 but was getting way to hot 4 me

i dont believe you. screenies/stability test results?
 
im running on a stock cooler, and I dont know anything about overclocking CPU's. limited success with ATI tool and my 9800 pro. If I could get it to 3.0ghz without becomming too hot, that would be nice.
 
go look at the overclocking faq in the OC and cooling section :)

if you are brand new to OCing, its a damn good read. 3ghz is pretty much a given with little to no more heat output on that particular chip.

if you can get a ghz OC out of that chip you should definetly know how to take a screen shot, my method is hit the "print screen" button near the top right of your keyboard, open up MS Paint and then goto edit>>Paste, then File>>save as, type in a name and change the file type to JPG

by raising the FSB - go read the FAQ in the overclocking and cooling section. it will make your life much, much easier.

You're also useless. He has no reason to switch to AMD unless he plays games for more than 3 hours a day. AMD is next to useless for heavy windows use compared to intel. Just because AMD is more popular with the enthusiast market doesnt mean he needs to join the fruitwagon with the rest of you.

you keep on telling yourself that - i have both and the athlon 64 (athlon XP was much, much worse, ive got that too:p) is definatly no slouch at windows. i also have a a true SMP rig and i perfer the A64 most of the time just cuase it gets things done faster, although the dually p3 does multitask smoother under really heavy load, alothough i noticed no slowdown at all while i was encoding a video and doing my other normal stuff... AIM, firefox, winamp, ect.

the simple fact is, that for most people, outside of gaming - all they need is a p3 with 512mb ram and a speedy HDD, as all they do is chat, work on office stuff, and surf the web. my laptop is a tualatin 1.2 with a gig and a 7k60 drive, and i absoultly love it.

I do gaming 1-2 hours per day (CSS/UT2K4) and i do heavy windows 2D work for my webdesign company from month to month. When i need it, the intel does not ever slow down after prolonged use or ever stutter in 2D applications. The intel will always be marginally better in windows performance, but thats where i need the marginal increase, not in gaming.
