I know this might be repetitive question but i cant get a definitive answer..

I have athlon 2800, 1 gig of ram, TI4200 128 graphics card

the 4200 has served me well for about a year and a half, no complaints at all. When the new games come out i plan to upgrade.

My question is do i go ahead and get a 9800 for $210 now? Or do i wait a couple more months until the new round of cards come out? I would wait but i dont want to spend more than $200 for a card. if the new ones come out and are lik $400 the screw that.

I was about to get a 9800 but i was comparing benchmarks, and i see that for 1942 on tomshardware it got anywhere from 90-99 fps.

I did fps on 1942 with my card and i got 85-90. So it doesnt seem like it would be much of a difference. But i realize this is just one test scenario and graphics are different for every game. Advice?

I'd wait for the next round of cards to come out, then get the 9800pro when the prices drop... That's what I'm doing anyway. :D

yea get the 9800pro in april when they new cards and games come out.

To me it is a case of, is it working and, are you happy with it now? If you answered yes to either or, both then wait and, see how low the prices drop then buy. Im using my G4 card till I doo a whole system up-grade then I will buy all the latest toys. My last card upgrade was from a Voodoo5 to a G4. It was working well then it couldnt play a thing so, I got rid of it.

ok so the issue is not 'should i get the 9800', is it when, from the looks of these responses.

So the verdict is: a 9800 should be good enough for doom, hl2?

Hello...
My name is AMDoido...
And i´m gonna tell you a story...
Its about a young boy...
He was only 16 years old...
He lives with his parents in Brazil..
And they love him very much...
One night he and some friends decided they were going to buy a new video card...
"New Video cards are far away, nothing is coming soon, we are doing a good deal" one of his friends said.
So they walk all over the St. Efigenia bridge, and they get to the best Computer Store in Brazil.
"WoW.. I´m so confuse" "Don´t worry... i know a guy that works here... he will help us" And he did...
"There is so many Video Cars... Look that one... it must scores a 10000 3dmarks"...
They turned around, and the Guy shown them a really good card.
They think a lot... One of them wasn´t very sure about it... he wanted to wait a little more... but the other one was pretty sure.
"Hey" the guy at the store said
"I was wondering if you wanna... You know... take this card?"
And he said .................................................... "YeS" ...
---
And he took the card... but the other one didn´t ... he waited a little more... he waited about 5 months...

Well...
I´m the one who waited... and i gotta a FX5900se... My friend had a Ti4800se... We both spent the same much of money on the cards... but i have a card 3x better than his just because of 5 months...
I was really desesperate for a new card... i had a TNT2... but anyway a wait... I´m not changing my video card till the middle of 2005.. My friend is problaby doing it...

in the mean time, get some RAMsinks and OC the shit out of your 4200, there supposed to take that well.

HL2? I think so. Isn't that what the russians are probably playing it on anyway? :D :D

Doom 3? prolly.

, and i see that for 1942 on tomshardware it got anywhere from 90-99 fps.

i wouldnt put too much faith into that website. something is seriously wrong with those dudes.

tom and that crackpipe of his............... hes gotta lay off :D

Yeah that site is sad...

The Really sad thing is ... I've got into flame wars because some people think everything he says is gold

wait I got a 9800np and I had a ti4600 before not too much of a difference you will see unless you use full settings. my ti4600 died for the last time died twice before this time they sent me a fx5900 because they were on infinite b/o for rmas on the ti 4600 sold it for 200.00 not bad it paid for my upgrade

4200 -> 9800 = good.

if you're considering 9800pro now, you can either wait a few months and save maybe $50 at best, or you can get it now and have 3-4 months of 9800pro goodness. that's like $12.50 a month - less that what people pay for AOL nowadays! :)

Whoa, I'm in the exact same boat. I just spent a bunch of money on brand new stuff and I didn't get a video card.

I'm using a GF4 Ti4200 128mb right now and I'm thoroughly disappointed with it in my new system-- it won't do!

Unfortunately for us Canadians, the 9800 Pro hasn't quite had the same price drop as it has for you Americans.

Bummer!

I'd drive across the boarder and grab one, but any warranty issues would be a total bitch to deal with.

i used to have an msi ti4400 and i upgraded to 9800pro, the image and performance definitely increased, i would suggest that you buy now coz' i dont think the price will drop further

sounds like we have the same system. I have a 2800, 1 gig of ram and HAD a 4200. I decided to go with a 9800 pro for 220. I figured if for some reason it's not good enough when HL2 comes out, or Doom 3 (probably in the fall) i could always upgrade and sell the 9800 for a decent amount still.

The 9800 is a damn fast card, and I'm really happy with it.

Well...
If you don´t like Toms, you all should know Gabriel Torres... from www.clubedohardware.com.br ...

He is the only guy (that i know) that can (he said) put a XP2800 to 100•c and when some people e-mail him telling he might have made a mistake he said: Dont believe? buy a XP2800 and you'll see it..... and in one of his test The Gf4 MX440 Score more than a Radeon 9700pro....

ok so i think i will get the 9800 now..Any advice on saphire vs ati brand? where to buy?

I suggest that you don't buy. You seem to have good performance right now. The Ti4200 is a good card that will serve you well for most of today's games. The DX9 cards are mostly overhyped because not a lot of games support this technology yet.

Bottom line, if your games are still playable than you don't need a card only to get a few more FPS. Couple more month utill the new cards come out, I'd wait.

I wouldn't upgrade from a Ti4200 right now.
Give it a few months, NV40 and the new line from ATI are coming out, prices will drop on the current cards again. I'm looking for a $150 9800.

If you look around used, you might be able to get one for $175 now.

when the new cards come out I don't know if I'd go with the 9800 pro even. Why not go for the 9800XT, since its price will hopefully plumit when the newest and best are released right?

I'm not in a big rush, that is just about when I plan to upgrade.
$150 is about all I ever spend on a vid card. I rarely have time to play, most of my games are old anyway... lol

would anyone mind suggesting differences between the 9800 and 9800xt? It seems benchmarks are not too different between these cards
