Do I need a heatsink?

I'm a little strapped for cash right now and was wondering if i really needed a heatsink right away?

I mean, can i install windows and stuff?

I have an old pentiumII heatsink laying around i think i might try to mount it on tehre somehow. would that work for a temporary solution?

on what? If you bought an OEM CPU, no. Get one, if you do not have a suificient one(stock).

why risk it to only install windows, i mean it's not like you are going to use the PC untill you get a HS anyways right ??

No HSF on most modern CPUs = Dead CPU very fast (if your mobo's/CPU's thermal protection doesn't kick in first)

Just go get a basic HSF if your CPU didn't come with one--shouldn't cost you more than $20

...I can't believe that someone actually asked this question

Running without a heatsink WILL kill your chip WITHIN the FIRST night of you owning it. Stupid, stupid idea. Just break down and buy a heatsink and fan whenever you get the cash.

nah running your chip without a heatsink will only kill your chip if your using an AMD withought the heat spreader i believe

P4s have thermal throttling so when they get really hot they turn off.

so your wont be able to use your PC at all withought a HSF but you wont destroy the chip

It's still CPU Damaging, I tried that. Temps go up quite a bit, from a max of 40C load and 35CMax on Idle on a 2.4GHZC non o-c, after trying that - Idle temps are 40C and 59C on Load.

ehh but it wont destroy the chip. i wasnt aware about load temps changing though

nah, it'll be fine. may smoke a little... discolor... melt the motherboard... you know, the little things.

well i tried to use the pentium heatsink but it keeps shutting off after like 5 seconds

i dont think that the metal on teh heatsink is touching enough of the little metal thing on the cpu

any way i could fix that? maybe sanding it?

just buy a heatsink... is it really worth potentially killing your chip?

If it keeps shutting off after "like 5 seconds" then either the CPU is getting too hot and the motherboard is powering down, or you already fried your CPU (that is what happens when your CPU is dead and you try to power on)

Dude save your money and get a Dell, no offense but people like you shouldn't attempt to build a computer.

No I mean, its a bad idea to run without the HSF, heh. Didnt mean to upset ya... :)

I just ran mine with the heatsink on there but without the fans and it still nuked itself. (almost)

Bad idea if I ever heard of one, but I think this guy is just messin with us anyway, heh. I dont think anyone could think they could get away with ZERO heatsink and fan on a MODERN cpu unless they were a complete idiot. (no offence if you relly thought you could :D)

As insulting as that may sound.. Im going to have to agree.. your risking death to your chip directly

Then tell your friend to get a Dell. :D

no HSF on an Athlon XP chip = DEAD after 2 seconds. i watched a video of these guys on toms hardware actually taking the HSF off the chip when it was playing UT. the thing instantly started smoking and crashed. it was sweet. the P4 tho, they just slow way down and then thermal throttle kicks in and shuts the system down.

C

Actually, that was an athlon, not an Athlon XP... it depends on your mobo really - i mismounted my XP2500 when putting on a thermal sensor, and my pc shut down instantly... its interesting, my load temps have stayed the same, but my idle temp is higher now... the oc is the same as its always been... i think my volcanos clip is a bit f#$ked.

I once made a stupid mistake with an old T-bird. I mounted the heatsink but forgot to plug in the fan. It burned itself in seconds.

Strapped for cash, you can get a good HSF by skipping a meal, or eating at home for a night or two. Come on 20-25 is nothing. Sell blood.

i actually sold blood just recently for computer parts. community bio resources, gave me 20 dollars

that shouldnt happen, the heatsink itself can absorb enough energy until you notice your mistake...

HANDS AWAY FROM THE POWER BUTTON!!!

I WANNA SEE 'EM IN THE AIR!!!

NOW; NICE AND SLOW; STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER!!!

really now: running anything faster than 500 mhz without a heatsink is risky at best, sure destruction at worst.

You, my man, are not [H]. With time, you might recognize the true ways of the [H], and thus be able to prevent stupid mistakes like those five you just made when you pressed the power button five times.

kthxbye
