Do i need a good sound card

Hi, well i was wonding do sound cards really effect what comes out of your speaks i have always thought that its the speaks making the sounds, can someone please tell me what sound cards actuly do.

2nd im getting a Razer Baracuda HP-1 Gaming Headset and i have been told i will need a good sound card to use its full portentul can any one recommend me on a good sound card

Anything but onboard :)

Yes, you need it, could be cheap one, audigy 1/2 for example, if you can't afford X-Fi.
 
I noticed a big improvement from onboard with AV710 ($30 card) on no-name $20 multimedia speakers :) So yes, anything but onboard.
 
Newer boards have HD audio codecs that are apparently just as good as dedicated sound cards, but for the majority of older systems a dedicated sound card will drastically improve sound quality.

According to the review in MAX PC Razer is releasing a companion sound card for that headset so personally i would hold off and grab that if you reeeeaaaallllyyyy want it. Now on another note the review they gave wasnt exactly promising their biggest complaint was that it had extremely weak bass.
