Do I need a clear coat?

I am painting the inside of my case white. I have three coats of paint already applied and am wondering if I need a clear coat. I really like how the white looks and I don’t want it to be shinny. Will adding a clear coat make it shinny? And is there really any practical reason to spray a clear coat for the inside of your case? With three coats of white and no clear coat, is there a chance that I can scratch up the paint by installing and changing parts?

It won't be that shiny if you use a clear coat with a matte finish. It would help prevent scratches when replacing parts, but is not really neccessary.

If you give the paint significant time to harden (like...a couple weeks), you wouldn't need the clear coat. But like the guy above me posted, if you want that gloss finish, with a thicker coat, and a little bit more durability, you should apply a clear coat or two.
 
use a clear coat with a matte finish to help protect your white paint and NOT get a shiny surface. then put a hot light over it for a long while. It helps to cure the paint better.
 
Dont put your entire case in the oven :rolleyes: Put a hot spot light next to it, thats a lot smarter.

Why would you recommend an oven to a guy who has no idea how to paint? Kaboom.

How long will it take to cure if I air dry it?

A LONG time to fully cure. You have to take into consideration that your results when painting using spray bottles is highly dependent upon how much you prep and a technique. Waiting for paint to fully cure requires the uttermost patience, if you're the perfectionist type. My advice is that you air dry it for at least 5-7 days. DO NOT bake your case. Read the label the spray cans, it should say up to what temperature your paint can last. The only paint that I've ever baked myself was the Dupli-Color high-heat brand of paint that's specifically designed for temperatures up to 500 degrees C. The common spray can stuff (Rust-oleum, Krylon, etc.) will bubble and melt if you bake them.

You can get one of those at home depot for less than $20 or you can just put it next to your fireplace or a vent. Since it's the winter time I'm sure they're on quite a bit.
