Do I need to have a case if I built my own computer?

Like its for working on java, html, mysql, c++, php, scripting, cs mapping, and etc.. and a little of gaming and Counter-Strike??

what is the function of a case...do I need to have one? cuz I saw somepeople don't need a case and their computer work fine.
 
A case is designed to protect your components from the random crap floating around your room. While a computer can work without one, why the HELL would you pay nearly $2000 for a computer and put a risk on it like that?

Get a case.

what are you going to do? set $2000 worth of computer equipment on your table and run it from there? it will work.. but i wouldn't do that.. get a case.. especially if you are spending that much.. .

i don't get what you are asking.. you can make a case out of a cardboard box.. you can screw your compontents to the wall.. but a case is a nice thing to have...

also. i am going to make a few suggestions..
i would get a different power supply.. thermaltake is kinda like a riced up honda in my opinion. .all so, no go.. get a good fortron, sparkle, pc power and cooling, antec.. there is a power supply section on this board.. go read what people are suggesting for your price range..

why are you getting such expensive ram? i don't see the point in 1 gig sticks right now.. they have higher latencies and cost more.. get 4 x 512 sticks.. and i can't keep up with everything, but .. PDP (patriot), pqi, and ocz have some good ram.. you can get 2-2-2 memory for less money than that 3-3-3 though..

i don't know anything about intel motherboards so i will let someone else suggest on that..

so.. just the money saved there will pay for a really nice case.. get a case.. seriously.. they were made for a reason.. if you want to have something small look at building a shuttle.. or something..

Yes, cases offer protection for the components inside it. Also, if the design is good, they offer cooling advantages over no case at all. You'll need all the cooling you can get for that Prescott P4, as they're notorious for running hot. Another thing cases do is make sure that everything stays together. For instance, if your video card slips out of the AGP port for any reason, you'll pretty much have to shut the computer down. Get a case, for goodness sake. You'll be glad you did.

Just put it in a safe place/location :D . If you like to keep changing your computer parts this will comes handy, but don't forget to ground your motherboard.

On another note, I have these 2 20' plasma tv/monitors laying around and I want to hook them up to my rig. Do I need a videocard?

Also, I've tried everything possible to make sound come out of my rig. I have winamp loaded and it seems to be playing something but I can't hear it. The little green jack in the back is making no sound at all. Should I be hooking speakers into it or something?

I'm a n00b so don't flame me, any help would be appreciated.

P.S. sometimes when the power goes out my computer turns off even though I have a "power supply" is it going bad?
 
Umm, no offense, but if you don't know if you need a case or not to build a computer, you should:

a) Search for some articles on building your own computer on Google.

or

b) Have someone else build a computer for you.

Asking if you need a case to build a computer is a bit like asking if you need building materials to make a house.

I thought this was a reputable forum full of kind and resourceful people, but when I see this, it makes me feel very sorry for new comers who have simple and legitimate questions that need answering in a polite manner.
I think the better way to handle that would have been to answer his question and direct him to the Search feature of the forum or Google instead of this pointless flaming.

believe it or not, the retail package is $300. there are good reasons to buy it, too. for example, if you have an OEM copy of XP, and your motherboard dies, you may have to buy a new copy. you won't be able to activate and use it with a different motherboard, unless it is exactly the same make and model of motherboard.

at my office, our network got hit by lightning, and probably 15 motherboards with integrated NICs got trashed. we had to buy 15 new copies. at that time, it was decided that we would buy retail packaging, because you can re-use retail licenses.

we also switched some computers to windows 2000... :D
 
Well, sadly, I just built a new computer and have been running it without a case for about 2 months. I am building my own case, but with school and work, it has become somthing I only have an hour to do on weekends and the sort. Running without a case will work, but it just isnt reccomended. I do not like running without it, and granted it is easier to play with, reset CMOS etc, simpply isnt worth the risk. I have mine on a seperate stand under my dexk so nothing can touch it for the time being, basically taking the precautions that I can untill I finish my case.

Its not somthing I originally meant to do, and I wouldn't reccomend it, $100 for a case = worth it
