The computer I'm gonna build:
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3000+($223)
Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo Platnium nForce3-250Gb($124)
RAM: Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, (Twin Pack) 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200($233)
Video Card: ATI x800pro ($425)
Case: Antec SLK3700-BQE($77)
Sound Card: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 zs($80)
Hard Drive: Seagate 160GB 7200RPM SATA($116)
CD/DVD ROM: Lite-On Black 8X DVD+/-RW Drive, Model SOHW-812S ($71)
Floppy: NEC 1.44MB Black Internal Floppy Drive, OEM ($11)

The case comes with a 350W antec psu, quiet edition or something like that, for someone's who's not overclocking, do I need a stronger PSU? If so, I heard thermaltake is good, any recomendations?
 
You should be fine.

If you want to upgrade, get the Antec TruePower 430

Buying an Antec PSU isn't exactly cutting corners, altough I agree with you that PCP & C is the best, hands down.
 
I don't mean this thread in particular, But I'm amazed at how little people pay creadence to the lowly,bottom feeding,insignificant piece of garbage, isn't important at all power supply.
 
I think you should be ok w/ that PSU. 1 CPU, 1 HD, 1 vid card, 1 sound card. That's not a heavy load. A 350W should be fine. You'll want a bigger one if you start tossing in tons of drives, a 6800U, or a bunch of cards but that should be enough for now.
An Antec "non-Truepower" 350W is in the decent category.

I'm not cutting corners, I'm just ignorant on psu's, hence this thread. You didn't really answer my question either, which is mostly my fault, is 350W enough? I meant better as in power, not quality, because from what I know antec has good powersupplies.
 
Try this just to give you an idea, You won't be sorry if you go for the best that you can afford, whatever brand.

How about a 380W psu? I can get that with a sonata case for less than buying a whole new PSU. See I just spent most of my money on the goodies and this psu crisis is really recent. Am I risking my hardware by going with with 350-380W psu's?

thats a good calculator i only have 3watts to spare! no more overclocking i'm guessing.
time to upgrade when i goto a64.
 
I'd say your cutting it close. What happens when you want to add another [H]drive or something. Another thing if you use alot of USB stuff where's the added power gonna come from? Now it's not a crisis (yet), but that's my point, if you spend a couple a bucks now you won't regret it and a good PS will be with you for many a day!

Not a bad idea since the True380 actually outputs around 470w (as per tom anyway), but i still think its an incremental upgrade. The best non-compromise imho is the new FSP solution: the Fortron or Sparkle 530w . User adjustable pots inside and they seem to be really popular.

That is a nice calc. However It lacks a selection for 5 or 6 HDD. My file server had 6 HDD and a DVD-ROM. Sigh.... Maybe i'm weird :p
 
i also suggest the FSP 530w PSU. or if you can afford the PCP&C Turbo-Cool 510, you won't regret it.

You ought to be more specific with this statement, because what a person would deduct from your statement is that Antec is not good for oc'ing PERIOD, and thus not good AT ALL. This plainly is not the case so please be more specific.

I think you're trying to say that its not good for extreme/potentially record setting overclocks, which may be so.
 
You are correct. I should have made myself clearer. If you're gonna be above 3.8ghz intel, 2.7ghz amd, doing any voltmods, or have more than 4 hard drives, I would not reccomend an antec.
 
I will say this much, with all the new psu offerings lately, it's much harder to recommend an Antec Truepower than it used to be. Especially in light of heightened psu quality awareness and the rise of PCP&C's popularity AND the silly cheap prices on these Fortrons.

I really like that new Ocz/Tagan psu thats coming out, can't wait for more feedback on them

Antec better have a good stuff in the pipeline because the other makers will siphon off a lot of sales.

the Antec SmartPower PSUs were pretty notorious for low rails.
 
Ya know, jamestime88 gives you great advice! Don't believe us "kids". Just do your homework, search around and find out which PS's come back with problems (of any kind) and which don't. The web is great.....They supply the facts and you decide!

stfu, my antec trupower 430 which is a hell of a lot better than the smartpower 350 couldn't run my rig @ 3.8ghz stable, stock volts, with one hard drive. His rig will consume more power. I'm so sick of all the antec fanboys just cuz antec sells so many psu's.
 
Are the pcp&c silencer models any good? Or are the fortron and sparkle 530W models already quiet? Not much point in buying a quiet case if I'm gonna have a roaring psu.
 
The silencer line is good, just not as good as the Turbo Cool line. I would put them on par with Enermaxs and Antecs and the like.
 
Ok, I'm NOT getting a pcp&c turbo psu, it's just too expensive. It's either a pcp&c silencer 410w or a the fortron/sparkle FSP 530w. What does FSP mean anyways?
