Do I need 1080p??

+1, If you get a 720p HDTV it will look like complete ass as a PC Monitor. A 1080P HDTV looks superb however and I will be gaming on this westy for years and years from now. The different might be hard to see when watching movies or tv. Try to plug a PC into them both and see which one has the better image.

Its because of the resolution.

1080p TVs run at a native resolution much higher than 720p/1080i TVs and with PC work its all about the resolution!

Many people bring up some good reasons on top of my reasons why you should get a 1080p set. Mainly because of the big difference over 720p. And you don't need to get a huge set to see 1080p, I have a 24" and I use it as my computer monitor and main TV. But right now, (1080p TV Broadcasts, next gen (Xbox 3, PS4) 1080p, and HD format winners) buying a 1080p is more of a futureproof option.

its funny after reading this post i went and read some on the HD content debate, and i read one article that said 1440p will be out in 2009 now that its that long away but i wonder if any content providers, ie. cable companies, xbox, ps are looking to that instead of 1080p for their next gen stuff?

I have a 56"Samsung DLP with a 360, and I had it connected by the component cables and it was pretty and all, but then I got the HD-DVD drive and an HDMI cable and it is GORGEOUS. Plus the 1 HDMI cable is nicer than the 5 RCA plugs.

Bottom line, you don't NEED 1080p, but with some of the sales and deals going on right now, why in god's name wouldn't you get it?

Size
Contrast
Level of detail
Color reproduction
Screen: Matte or Gloss
1080p over component (somes TV's such as the Panasonic 700u & 770U will not output 1080p for games over component)
120hz conversion

If you have the room for it, always size before anything else. Then you can consider the rest of the 5 apsects when shopping around for a TV.

I'm currently using a Samsung LNT-4071 with 120hz auto motion plus, which surprisingly works for games

Praise to you friend, for that is by far, in my opinion, the best LCD tv.

For the time being it is, next year OLED TV sets will become the norm. The 81 series Samsung LCD and 87-89 series DLP's are already based on LED technology

+1, that's our living room TV...my wife and I absolutely love it. The auto motion plus...aside from some frame rate drops w/HD DVD on the 360 add-on (fix: turn AMP off), AMP adds amazing clarity and realism to HD programming, Games (esp. racing...you should see FlatOut with AMP on high!), and SD DVDs. Put AMP on high for cable HD shows (Two and A Half Men, CSI, Unit, etc) and you would swear you were there, on the set, while they're filming! Not for everyone I'm sure, but it's amazing and we don't regret the investment in this 1080p for one moment.
