hi all,

I am using two WD drives in RAID 0 on the on-board RAID controller on the Asus P5E. my question is, if the on-board RAID controller dies, can I connect the two drives to other raid controllers (friend's P5E or others stand alone controllers), and access the data? thanks

The correct answer is that you would just get your data off your recent backup because running RAID 0 you know that your data has increased vulnerability.

But yes, it is possible to plug in the drives to another like motherboard.

As another option to tearing into a friend's system, GetDataBack + RAID Reconstructor from http://www.runtime.org/ have a high probability of recovering your data, but don't rely on this as a backup.

I have done this, it worked... they were identical chipsets, but I read on Toms Hardware Software Raid5 (Using the onboard controller) it didn't matter which chipset it was or which sata ports were used (Using 2 different controllers) Software Raid5 (With Windows) was able to handle it fine...

But if you set it up before windows, AKA it was handled by the controller's BIOS you might have to use an identical chipset/motherboard to get the data.

I'd never put anything important on a Raid0 though... ever...
