So I want to buy a new processor, athlon xp 2500+. The problem is they tell me I need to buy a new motherboard and ram, which means I have to reformat. Of course I am like "wtf"?? I have 2 hard drives which add up to about 120 gigs worth of stuff. I also need new power supply supposedly. Any other options I have?? Do I have to reformat?? I'd rather not.

Currently I have 512 sdram
Athlon 1333
1333 something mobo or something.

I had an episode... got back from the US after my vacation with all my new PC stuff in the sig... put it all in and booted up. Windows XP did not boot though. I guess such a dramatic change makes for a lot of issues.
I had to reformat, but before I did that I backed up important stuff that I couldn't just reinstall, e.g. mail and program files.
If you have 2 HD's, just drop the important stuff on the HD that you will not be using as your boot drive. I have all my essentials on a 2nd hd without the OS on it.

One thing you CAN try before booting up with all your new stuff is uninstall EVERY DEVICE driver from the comp, through the device manager. then turn off, put in your new stuff, and boot up.
It's a driver issue for sure.

If that didn't work, try putting your old stuff back in and booting, or backup the drives at your friend's house or something.

Note: if your hard drives are in dynamic configuration (right-click my computer > manage > disk management and see there if they are basic or dynamic) YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCES THEM on a computer running XP Home edition. Only XP Pro and win2000 can acces dynamic drives.
I found that out the hard way, I was desperate for a professional OS to back up my poor drive.

Hope this helps.
